Hollow/Shell Problems with complex model in Fusion 360

Hi there, I'm having a problem with a model of mine that simply refuses to work when I'm trying to add thickness to the model, the design is quite complex and I'm very new to Fusion 360 (coming here from using Maya a lot, very different workflow!).

I've tried using the Shell tool, as well as trying to adjust the thickness of the faces. Nothing I am trying seems to be working which leads me to believe there is something wrong with the model itself that I am unaware of due to recently getting into Fusion. 

Any help/guidance would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Well  , I also have a lot of problems with shelling complex shapes, One thing I do , to change into Surface mode (Patch)

and delete the face were you want the opening and have a look at what's going on in side the model.

You can see in the screen shots the model contains some left over internal surfaces That serve no purpose for the model but will break the shell function.  A model this complex may not shell anyway, Another method I do for these sort of model is create a smaller version and remove some of the external detail and use it has a cutting tool

If you have to put the reams "complex" and "shell" into one sentence that already explains the reason this does not work. Shelling complex objets rarely works and @Anonymous to create a scaled down simplified version is spot on.
