Copy component from one design to another...

Anonymous

I designed few furnitures each as a individual design in different project, I a very early version I was able to copy and paste components between two deprecate designs but it's look like I can not do it know. I even try to export designs and upload them within one new project but even then I can not copy elements between two designs.
Some of those drawing took me over 30 hours each and I have 8 of them that I need put together. So drafting all over again is not an option
Is there a way of copy component from one design into another?
If so how can I do this?

There is an Insert command available from the Assemble drop down menu.

I also believe it is possible to copy and paste bodies while in the Direct Edit mode. In other words, copy the body from the target design, use the create base feature command in the destination design, and then paste while the create base feature command is still active. Check out the below forum post and let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

You should be able to right click a component and Copy, change to a different design and right click a component and Paste New. You can select the top node in the browser or any other component to paste into.

I'm having the same issue. I have a shape that I want to cut out of many designs so that all the designs fit the same template. I have a file that just has a cup shape. I select it and can copy it from right click or the body menu. I can even paste it in the same file. Then I select the other file with the tab. Right click, no paste. Right click on the Body Menu or any other menu and the option is not there.

You can only copy and paste components from one document to another. You should try and work with components not bodies, your best bet when you start a design is make a component for each part, make sure the component is active while you work on it to make it self contained. If you work like this you will have fewer problems copying components.

Here's a link with some info on using components.

On top of the Forum web page is a "Learn" menu.

Please  review the information in the  "Manage" section in the learnig resources, following that button.

It covers how to manage data including inserting other designs into  new one.

i just checked out the Learn>Manage tut.  it talks about saving data, using a360 to view. It does not talk about inserting objects and other files into a design.

When I try to Paste New, in the selected topmost element in the destination document it just opens the standard Move/Copy dialog with the Selection field being empty and the OK button is not enabled.

What's in the component in the source file? Can you add some pictures so we can see what you're working with in the source file or better still make a screencast.

There's a single body under the Axle component and a body under the MotorBody component.  I've tried copying both parent components together and singly with no success.

Seems like it should work and I just did a similar test just in case there's any problem with the current version of Fusion and it worked. Can you share the design? If you can, export as an f3d and attach.

Thanks Mark

Hi I've attached both the source and the dest if needed.  I made sure the MotorBody component was active/selected, did a right click copy with cursor on the component, switched to the other document and tried a right click paste new upon the topmost item, but the standard dialog showed, I selected Move Object: Components and nothing is selected and the OK button is greyed out.  Thank you for your help.

The problem is you're not following Rule#1. You are not creating self contained components. Using combine to bring bodies into a component isn't going to work, also create components from bodies is not going to work either. If you're working with assembles have a read of the Rule#1 thread. I've attached your file where I've moved all the sketches and bodies into one component and now it can be copied.

Here's another way, see attached file. I've inserted your design into another file as a subassembly. If you select the subassembly and copy you can paste new into another file. The reason this works is because the subassembly component contains all the information for the components created inside it. So the subassembly is self contained.

You'd make a good investigator.  I had forgotten to create a new component before I started work and wound up with bodies and sketches outside any component and had invested too much time in it before I realized my mistake, so I did some thrashing around to get the bodies into components.

Your fix worked perfectly.  I thank you so much for your taking the time to help me with it.  Do you work for Autodesk or are you just helping out of the kindness of your heart?  I never cease to be impressed with the help others here have proven willing to offer.  I'd be pleased to send you $50 up front via Paypal or whatever pay app you might prefer, if you can solve another problem that has been plaguing me, but which would probably be easy for you.  Thanks again.

No I don't work for AutoDesk, just like problem solving. Also helping out is a good way of learning the program, get to see and work on things I wouldn't normally. Do you need help with something you don't want to share on the forum? You can PM me a and figure out a way to take a look at your project, just hover your mouse over my name and there's an option to send a private message.
