Can't select coordinate axis when creating sketch Symmetry constraint

When sketching and using the Symmetry constraint, I have to create a line through the Origin to use as the line of symmetry.

This seems odd because coordinate axes are recognized when selecting one as a revolve axis for example.

Is this the way it is, or is there something I don't know?

These axes can't be used as construction lines in sketch mode.
