Sketchup Conversion?

In Revit one can import a Sketchup object into a Family and then use it, but the punch line is that the imported Sketchup object is not editable because it is not really converted into Revit format.

Ok, the question is if Formit does the same thing as Revit? Or is there some sort of actual conversion that would make the Sketchup objects editable?? I'm hoping for the latter which would be a real breakthrough.

Hi, I have a similar question to MirraLee's question about the file size of a .skp file. I'm using Formit on Chrome and converting a 30MB .skp file is fine using the converter. But the .axm won't open in Formit. I've tested a smaller 5MB .skp file and it opens fine in Formit as a .axm file. Is it just a case of leaving it to spool for longer or is there a limit to the size of file that will work?

I would try the OBJ option but I think I can only export from Sketchup as an OBJ in the Pro Sketchup version. Is there another way to generate an OBJ from Sketchup? Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Catherine

Thanks Catherine for posting!

There is no file size limit, so yes - it is more a matter of waiting for the file to load into the web app. If you get the warning message on Chrome, just ask it to continue waiting - it hasn't crashed, it might just be thinking.

Note that chrome web browsers (especially 32 bit chrome) have a smaller memory footprint, so there are limitations on the browser as to what will open - but a 30mb SKP file should be OK. There might be some extremely large image textures in your SKP file that could cause issues.

If you'd like me to test it out as well, I'll send you a direct message for follow up!

Thanks again,

Tobias

Hi Catherine - I can't send you a direct message! I think this is a feature you need to enable!

Hi Tobias, How do I enable direct messages? In the mean time I'll check that there are no images hidden in the SKP file and leave Chrome running in the background to try to open the AXM file. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks, Catherine

Hello:

I tested the FormIt 360 Converter for both Revit 2015 and 2016 and was disappointed to discover that it imports .axm files as in-place families into a Revit project file instead of Revit family files.    Am I missing something in the workflow?   Is there a way to import .axm files into Revit families?

Hi Fred - Thank you for checking out the converter, and for posting your question! I'm sorry for the slow reply, I was at Autodesk University last week - answering lots of other FormIt questions!

I think I know the answer to your question and it's pretty easy. When you have some geometry in FormIt that you want to convert to a Revit family...

- First Group it (select the geometry you want, then hit G on keyboard, or right click and choose the Group icon).

- Then select and edit the group (either double click it, or select, right click, edit icon).

- Finally in the properties panel in the tab on the right, name and categorize your group.

- Save your FormIt file (then export locally, or save to A360 drive and download from there)

- Open Revit and use the convert FormIt to RVT button in the converter

- When you convert this named and categorized FormIt Group it becomes a Revit Family with the same name (plus a prefix to ID it as from FormIt)

Hope this helps - and again, sorry for the slow response! Let us know what else we can do to help you out,

Tobias

Hi Hampus - I can't tell for sure what the error is from the .txt file - sorry about that! I'll send you a PM so you can share the SKP file with me and I can help test it out.

Thanks,

Tobias

Dear Sir/Madam
Hello, I reach you in order to kindly ask you, is there any way to export Sketchup to Revit Models when I have a curve form? Meanwhile, EvolveLab’s plugin (For transferring SKP to Revit) best solution only can set up for cubic volumes with straight lines but when we have curvilinear free-forms it cannot handle because as you know SKP interface is based on mesh and Revit or Rhino has NURBS interface. Therefore, when I import SKP file(I have tried to export in different version and solution)(IFC,…) then the roof or wall transform to triangular shape as mesh surface and I cannot use roof or wall toolbar in Revit. Indeed, I wonder to have one shape to make it roof or door in Revit. (Nurbs Surface- attachment file)
Furthermore, I have imported SKP file to the Rhino6 in order to use the Meshtonurb command (Reverse engineering a mesh into a smooth surface) but unfortunately, Rhino still preserves all the original facets so it wouldn’t be too helpful for me. Is there any third party Rhino plugins or solution that make an attempt to smooth the surface (Nurbs) in order to use in Revit?
It would be your kindness if you assist me to export Sketchup to Revit Models when I have a curve form. Thanks in advance.
P.P: I have tested the SharkCAD Pro-AP or ViaCAD 10 software in order to transform my file but unfortunately they automatically transform all mesh surface (Curve form) to Nurbs surface (Even straight lines) and you miss your main idea and also form.
