sketch not closing

When a loop is closed but does not create a face that can be extruded, what is the fix procedure?

Hmmm - not sure I can help without a screenshot or example file - can you attach some example?

My guess is that the end points aren't quite in alignment - you can try drawing from corner to corner to make triangles. 

Anyhow - I've been frustrated by this sort of thing before, hopefully I can offer some suggestion when I see your specific case.
