Revit to Formit issue

Hello,

Our office is transitioning to the AEC worflow using Revit and Formit. I have been researching Formit and the best way to use the software. I began a small project in Revit with the basic structure built and now the client wants to go back to concept mode and quickly wants a 3D screenshot. In my opinion and through research the best way to do this quickly would be to take the Revit model into Formit.

I downloaded the converter and tried to convert my Revit model to a Formit model to quickly fill in the interior. The conversion took about an hour and only left me with a list of folders labeled as separate family items converted from the file. (see image attached below)converted files.PNG

I understand that there are only specific categories that are translated, but shouldn't walls, structure, etc. come in as masses? Or at least 1 3D model file to put into Formit?

If this isn't going to work, can I build the interior in Formit and put it into the Revit model interior in place?

I have Revit 2018 and Formit Pro360.

Thanks,

-Angel

Hi Angel,

Currently, your best bet for converting Revit geometry back into FormIt is to use Revit's SAT exporter (File > Export > CAD Formats > ACIS (SAT)). This will give you an SAT file that you can open/import in FormIt and modify, then send back to Revit via the Converter Add-In.

We're looking at improvements with this Revit-To-FormIt workflow, so stay tuned.

You can absolutely start modeling in FormIt and get the data across to Revit, including Levels and Materials! For this, you'll save your FormIt file, then use the Converter Add-In to "Import FormIt to RVT" (screenshot below) to import the FormIt geometry and metadata I mentioned above into your current Revit project.

import formit to rvt.PNG

Here is some additional information on the Converter Add-In, and what each of the operations does: https://formit.autodesk.com/page/formit-revit.

You can also see examples of the Add-In's capabilities in our FormIt Primer: https://windows.help.formit.autodesk.com/Building-the-Farnsworth-House/Revit-Interop.html

The folders in your screenshot are from the first command in the Add-In (Convert RFA to FormIt), which converts a folder of RFAs to a folder of FormIt files. This works great if you're looking to import RFA geometry into FormIt (and pointing the FormIt Content Library to the RFA output folder makes this drag-and-drop easy). But for what you're after, I think you'll want to use the SAT export I mention above.

Hope this helps!
