FormIt v16 For Android

Just curious to know what is happening with the FormIt Android development? I notice v16 is available for everything except android. Infact, the latest android version I could download is v13.2.228!! Is this correct? Has the android app been discontinued?

I take my tablet with me most places, not being able to access the advanced modelling features is really frustrating and to add insult to injury, accessing the web version detects it as a mobile device, so no go there either.

Thanks for any further info.

Thank you for your interest in FormIt! We have put further development of the Android version on hold while we evaluate different options for developing apps on mobile.

@tvollaro, thanks for the response. I have no idea what that means (since an iOS version was released) but I will assume I shouldn't hold my breath. Smiley Very Happy

Same here. I use formit for 3d models for videogame development and just waiting for the update for about a year. I find myself stuck since it has some bugs like blurry material textures while importing them and so on... And don't wanna buy an ipad just for 1 app... What is going on with the android development? Im getting desperate of waiting...

You guys going back to IPAD- again? I realize they have a more advanced and locked down system for development- but... After windows backed out of the mobile market- the world is running on Android... 86% in Q1 of 2019 of the worlds market share to be precise. This is up from the last time I posted similar comments on A360 development years ago (It was about 80% then... https://www.idc.com/promo/smartphone-market-share/os)

Granted only 2/3 of the market in the US runs on Android:

https://www.techspot.com/news/75658-iphone-sales-help-ios-grow-us-market-share.html

But it is only a matter of time before they android turns Apple under. I never understood how or why people overpay for Apple's planned short-run-obsolescence  with their products and their restrained limits on innovation in the market, or how they manage to survive. That market sector seems to like spending lots of money just to keep up with the Jonses!

Construction and AE Design on the other hand are building the world and some of the most frugal customers you will meet! The Apple mentality of "spend more and get less until we cut you off" are hard to swallow.

Hi Ron,

We appreciate your passion, and you raise some good points. Thanks for chiming in.

Android required a disproportionately high amount of testing and development effort across many devices due to its fragmentation, especially when compared to iOS, where the experience is more consistent across screen sizes and device generations. That, combined with limited development resources, meant that FormIt for Android started to slip behind other FormIt apps in terms of features and reliability, and we made the hard choice to stop developing it altogether.

We're not playing platform favorites, but rather making decisions based on resources and level of effort required. Of course, this can always change, so if we find ourselves in a position to restart development on FormIt for Android, we'll certainly let you know.

@josh.goldstein  - Target a few key platforms and note that in the Form it description in the app store. Google play will tell you if your device is compatible or not. If Autodesk is serious about cloud development and access- the smartphone market cannot be ignored. If you want to save resources dump apple as well and apply those resources to the 360 Platform as a web based app... Apple just isn't going to cut it and though they are raking in hundreds of billions with their locked OS, under paid chinese assembly plants and over priced phones with throttled performance 'enhancements'  - I cannot believe this will continue- especially if the next round of tariffs take hold. 25% is going to be a killer.

I have heard the fragmentation argument before- The solution is to start with "Marshmallow" or the current "Oreo" and Samsung to the the majority of the android market and spread out from there : )

Nice thing about android is the updates - and most systems are kept current... if not they don't get the current goodies. Of course the other issue on the downside is the OS is always updating...

Or partner with Google / pixel or any number of other manufacturer's (Just hot Huawei or ZTE or the other patent thieves...)

I would imagine the resolution like any other issues are patched through the OS and developer packages... Or go completely web based supported on any device(And again, drop apple)

Seems logical enough. : )

@ahmed_q

They appear to have discontinued it.
