Unable to Move Imported Mass Plan from SketchUp in Autodesk Forma

Hello everyone,

I recently imported a mass plan from SketchUp into Autodesk Forma using the OBJ format. The import process seemed to work fine and the model is classified as generic within Forma.

However, after the initial placement of the model, I am unable to move it. I've tried selecting and dragging it, but it remains fixed in its initial position.

Has anyone else encountered this issue or have any suggestions on how to resolve it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Matteo
Please try one of two things:
- Make sure the "Generic" layer is unlocked.
- If the imported model is in the "Base", make sure to click the "Edit Base to make changes", or double click the geometry,  to be able to edit or move the geometry.
Let us know if either helps.

Yes my generic is unlocked and my imported model is in the Base however I just cannot select it even in edit mode or can't enter edit mode by double clicking on it since I cannot "click it". I can select it if I select all of the area of my generic in edit mode but cannot move it after. Thanks for the reply.

Hi @matteo_chanlothernandez,

Would you be willing to share the OBJ with us so we can take a closer look?

If you're open to that, I'll reach out via direct message so it's not shared publicly.

Thanks for sharing the OBJ with us!

Here's what I've found:

  • Once the OBJ is imported and placed into the 3D scene, selecting it using just a single click is a little difficult - this is something we can try to improve
  • However, you can click and drag from right-to-left to select anything that touches the area selection window as shown below
  • This should enable you to select the OBJ without selecting anything else, if you use a small selection window, zoomed in
  • Once selected, you can use the Move tool in the toolbar - click the first point as the start point, and the second point as the final move point

20240722 selection, move, edit.gif

  • Once selected, you can also right-click and choose "Edit in 3D Sketch" if you want to edit the linework.
    • Note that the lines will turn red in this mode because it's warning you that the edges are not part of a solid and can't receive levels as a "Building" until you extrude or otherwise make a solid.

Hope this helps!
