Issue Name by Issue Type: Improve Issue Title Handlin

Issue Name by Issue Type: Improve Issue Title Handlin

Problem

Issues in Autodesk Forma are automatically assigned a title based on the selected Issue Type. This often results in issues being created with generic titles such as “Design” or “Design Review”, simply because these are available Issue Types.

Although the Issue Title is configured as a required field, the automatic title means users rarely replace it with a meaningful description. As a result, the Issue Title often becomes little more than a duplicate of the Issue Type.

There is also an inconsistency when users change the Issue Type during issue creation. For example, a user may initially select Design Review, resulting in the title “Design Review”, and then change the Issue Type to Design. The resulting issue can therefore have:

  • Type: Design
  • Title: Design Review

This creates misleading or inconsistent issue information.

Challenges / Consequences

  • Issues become difficult to distinguish from each other in lists, reports and dashboards.
  • Issue titles provide little additional information beyond the Issue Type.
  • Users have to manually correct automatically generated titles.
  • Changing the Issue Type during creation can result in mismatched Type and Title values.
  • Generic titles reduce the usefulness of issue data for reporting, filtering and downstream workflows.
  • Large projects can quickly accumulate hundreds or thousands of issues with repetitive and non-descriptive titles.

Suggested Improvement

Consider changing the default behavior so that the Issue Title is initially blank, even when Issue Type is selected.

Alternatively, the Issue Type could be used as a placeholder rather than automatically populating the Issue Title. The user should be encouraged or required to provide a meaningful title that describes the actual issue.

If automatic title generation is retained, the title should at minimum be dynamically updated when the Issue Type changes until the user has manually edited the title.

Expected Benefit

Separating Issue Type from Issue Title would make issue data more descriptive and consistent, improve usability in issue lists and reports, and reduce the amount of manual correction required from users.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Recently, we started using the ACC function "Issues" and were quite satisfied with it. A couple of weeks later, an update seems to have been implemented, so that now in the mandatory field "Title," the name can be typed in, but it is always pre-filled with the "Type" value. Many users think they do not need to enter anything there because it is already filled in. As a result, we receive an overview of issues that all have the same name; how are we supposed to differentiate them? This is incorrect; the field should be empty by starting creating an a new issue! Please change this with the next update!

Thank you very much.

I agree. If it is a mandatory field, the task cannot be completed without providing a meaningful title.

Have you tried configuring the Issues module per type?

Currently, when you create a new issue from your mobile device the Issue Title defaults to the Issue Type. It's not clear that this is a field that people should be updating, so we are seeing a significant amount of project teams leaving the Title as the default value. This is causing the log to have several issues listed as 'Deficiency'.

Could Autodesk improve the UI to make it clear that it's a field that should be updated?

I want to suggest that the title block in the issues pop up window when creating new issues to start out as empty.

Right now the title automatically fills out with either the issue type name or issue template name. This has caused a lot of confusion in our projects since many members don't remember to change the title, leading to multiple issues having the same title.

Allow having a blank title field when creating an issue from a template. Currently, the title field is populated with the Template title.

When creating or configuring an Issue template in Autodesk Forma for Construction, the template title is currently populated with the same value as the template name.
We would like it to be possible to leave the Issue title blank in the template.
The template name is used to identify and select the template, while the Issue title should be entered by the user when creating the actual Issue. Automatically using the template name as the Issue title creates unnecessary duplicate information and requires users to overwrite it each time.
Allowing the title field to remain blank would make templates more flexible and ensure that users enter a meaningful title specific to the Issue being created.
