Multi Patients At Same Time?

[ FlexSim 21.0.10 ]

Hi Team,

I am building a flow where MD can handle 2 patient at a time. I am building it using process flow. I tried to increase capacity of 3D object to 2 but it is not working.

How can I achieve it with easy scalability?

Thank you!

That capacity is left over from the taskexecuter standard FlexSim properties which the People::Staff class inherits, and is used when a task executer looks at task sequences to see how many items it can carry.

What your suggesting sounds like it might need a great deal of care to ensure the process doesn't assume the staff location is always with the patient and to coordinate parallel tasks.

If they truly can handle two at once no matter the task and location then the easiest solution would be to add a another member of staff to perform the same function.

In regular (non-People related) process flows I would say push the same resource to a list twice (making sure that duplicates are allowed).

Hi @Jason Lightfoot,

I don't understand your point.

Can you help me with working model if possible?

Thank you!

Hmm.. I made 4 points:
  • What capacity is used for
  • Scepticism about an MD being able to handle two patients at once
  • The simplest workaround
  • What you could do using lists instead of Staff as an alternative method

What are you struggling with?

Hi @Jason Lightfoot,

I don't understand how can I use list instead of Staff.

Can you make changes in attached model for the same?

Thank you!

Here's an example of the list approach.

Hi @Jason Lightfoot,

I have checked the model. I have 1 question here.

Since we haven't use the reference of resource anywhere so how resource will be acquired.

Even I am able to deploy resource for another task.

It's a different approach - you pull from the list directly instead of using the resources activities - it gives you more flexibility (like having a resource allocated twice as you requested) - but you may end up having to put in more effort.

You can also use the resource activities to refer to a list (example attached). I found there is no benefit to this - all it does is restrict which token can return the resource - but it does make clear your intent/purpose a little more than a purely list-based approach.

Hi @Jason Lightfoot,

I am still seeing resource(MD1) not acquired.

Since resource(MD1) is having multiple engagement including single patient in another flow. So, I will have to track overall utilization of resource(MD1) at the last. That's why I am focusing acquiring resource when there is patient.

In model, I am able to see that resource is occupied in two flows at the same time which is not the real case.

You said the resource could be used by two processes in parallel.

Hi @Jason Lightfoot,

May be I couldn't explain properly. But let me explain 1 more time.

Flow1>2 patient at a time by 1 resource

Flow2>1 patient at a time by resource

I have added Flow2 in recent model using acquire/release resource activities.

Thank you!

So the resource can actually be used by 3 or more patients? (maybe you have even more flows)

Or are you saying the resource can handle 2 Flow 1 patients OR 1 flow2 patient? If that's the case - have Flow2 pull both instances of the resource.
