Installing Flame 2018 with CENTOS 7.2 AUTODESK INSTALL

Hello

I am struggling with a Flame 2018 install with CENTOS 7.2

I have downloaded the :

autodesk_flameassist_2018_LINUX64_CENTOS7.tar

CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-1511-ADSK_Rev002.iso

I made the DVD from the CENTOS iso, installed the OS and now want to install the flameassist.

When launching the ./INSTALL_FLAMEASSIST , I get the error below.

On the autodesk website, the older versions of the install talk about building a DVD with flameassist installed included but on the 2018 specs, the i,stall is really unclear (for someone who has never done this before).

Below is the error log.

Any ideas what I need to do to get it all working?

Thanks

no need to install from a DVD, try just downloading the flame assist installer from your account

Also since it is Linux i would make sure your license server is set up before running the flame assist installer, last thing is to make sure you have installed the latest DKU before running the flame assist installer

hope that makes sense

Looks like I started all wrong. I am installing on a HP Z640 with the latest BIOS. I was choosing the EUFI CD Boot up option that does not offer the Autodesk Installer.

My DVD does have the KS file so I figured that it was not being taken into consideration, so I am currently installing off the Legacy CD Boot up, that does have the Autodesk install option.

That said, you mention DKU and licence server. I have always had a licence file that I placed in the OS. There is a CENTRAL_INSTALL , INSTALL_WIRETAPCENTRAL & INSTALL_FLAMEASSIST in the package. Is this all I need or is there more?
Thank you

keep in mind my install experience is on a custom linux box so your results may vary

the DKU is a separate install from that stuff i believe, it lives here

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/flame-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles...

as for licensing, as of 2018 nodelocked licencing is gone and u need a license server running now for the linux side

the only one u need to run is ./INSTALL_FLAMEASSIST

Hello Joe

Did as you prescribed, installed the DKU and on the restart, the system's GUI does not start so I am stuck in command line. I login as root and can wander around the system, do install etc but only in the command line). A little frustrating. I am also CHLOWDEN on the Thunderbolt thread. I too have a non standard machine, HP Z640 machine, but I figure that if you can do it on an ASUS, I should have no problem on an HP. Well I am for the moment being proved wrong. My goal is to migrate off my mac system (an old macpro 2012) but keep some of the hardware and the flexibility of the mac (at least until mac comes clean on its enterprise strategy)

The DKU has BIOS elements but I can't see in the BIOS what would stop the GUI launching.

All this to test the HP Thunderbolt card perfs ... but if it works, this system could be a great, affordable hybrid.

Thanks

Christopher

This may or may not have anything to do with your problem, but I find that for me on my home setup, what the DKU always breaks is my X11 config. I'm on a GTX 980Ti with a 30" HP monitor and it winds up messing up the refresh rate or something such that the monitor just sits there flashing in standby.

What I do now is install the DKU, then before I reboot go into /etc/X11/ and copy the xorg.conf.beforeDKU_install over the xorg.conf it installs, so I don't get stranded on reboot with NO screen.

Not sure if the X config is preventing your GUI from starting or if you're just starting up at the wrong runlevel or something.. do you see any nVidia warnings/errors while it's booting?

Its really strange it boots u into command line after installing the dku, have you tried 'systemctl enable gdm' then reboot?

Hello Sorry for the late reply. After hours of installing & reinstalling, speaking to the help line and reading the manual (written in pure engineering language), I have got a system sort of running. I need to sort out networking issues but the hard part is done. I will write an idiots overview of how I installed the system and I will share it very soon. There are so many steps so it is taking me some time. I can confirm that the Z640 with a GTX690 opens and basic functionality works. The Promise Thunderbolt RAID also works but only when formated in ext4. In hfsplus (mac) it is only read only for me. Terminal tests claim that the Thuinderbolt delivers a 1GB per sec read / write, but this needs to be confirmed in practice. I know that the GTX960 will cause problems with certain effects and so this is not a viable config unless in an emergency. thanks for all the help

AN OVERVIEW OF THE INSTALL PROCEDURE FOR ISTALLING FLAME 2018 ON CENTOS 7.2
(This is my personal experience and has nothing official, so please don't hate me if it does not work for you.)

YOU NEED TO HAVE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LINUX TERMINAL COMMANDS AND SOME PERSEVERANCE TO MAKE THIS WORK eg
cd cd .. ./ su sudo

The install below was done on a HP Z640 with 2  hard drives, one for Windows and another for Centos. For ease, avoid using 2 hard drives that are the same size or brand as often the naming in the BIOS is not clear, as they can be diffcult to easily identfy at launch.

1. Download validated Autodesk created CENTOS install ISO for Auotdesk website
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/flame-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles...
2. Download  DKU (Driver and Kernel Utility) updates that correspond to version of Flame to install from autodesk website;
3; Burn  Autodesk created CENTOS to DVD and put in PC
4; Copy DKU, Terrablock install onto USB key
5. Boot HP machine and push f10 config BIOS
6. Find the Thunderbolt toggle in the BIOS menus and choose Legacy
7. Save. HP will reboot
8. On reboot, press f9 to choose bootup source.Choose Legacy CD player DO NOT CHOOSE EUFI CD BOOT
9. Choose Autodesk Flame install
10. In set up menu, ad french keyboard (I am in france), choose hard drive & set to automatic partition, erase existing partions, check that ethernet is on (There is plenty on the web to explain this)
11. push install & setup admin account
12. Install takes about 45mins, restart the machine not forgetting to push f9 and choosing the legacy hard drive where you installed the Centos on
13. Login as root, password = password. Keyboard is in QWERTY by default.
14. copy off the usb key the DKU and any other installs
15. use terminal to launch INSTALL_DKU ./INSTALL_DKU
16. For non certified configs, accept the standard config install. This config has more drivers that the standard. Install takes about 10 mins
17. Restart the machine, f9 and choose LEGACY (NOT EUFI) hard drive that has your OS and login as root password=password
18. Now you have an Autodesk system. To be sure, go to the application menu, open the system settings menu and open network settings. If it is all greyed out, you have no internet connection and feel a little depressed, all is good. If you have an internet connection, then you have a problem with the install.
19. Now you have to setup a Licence server and the network services.
20. Download the latest Autodesk Network Licence manager for the autodesk website.

21. If you do not have a licence, you will need to get an account from autodesk.com that gives you acces to your licences. This is well explained below
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/flame-products/learn-explore/caas/blog/area.autodesk.com/lear...
http://area.autodesk.com/learning/series/licensing-the-flame-family/licensing-the-flame-family---mac...

But it never quite works like in the demo, so read this:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/network-license-administration/install-and-configure...
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/network-license-administration/install-and-configure...

This is primarily for mac but there are similar pages for linux and windows.
You now have licence and a server running either on your PC or on your network.

22. Configuring the network:
The newtwork info is key as it creates not only acess to the web, but also how the Stone and Wire is accessed, wiretap and backburner and your licence server. LOTS OF INSTALL PROBLEMS COME FROM NETWORK ISSUES. The link below explains what t
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/flame-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018/EN...

Network configuration
Configuration will depend on the local network, but following are some hints:
/etc/hosts: add the hostname and IP address.
/etc/sysconfig/network: add values for HOSTNAME, NETWORKING, GATEWAY, and  NISDOMAIN
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (if using the device eth0) update values for IPADDR, NETMASK, and ONBOOT
The hostnname can be set manually with sudo hostnamectl set-hostname <your hostname>.

From what I understand, the hosts file is used by the Stone and Wire. If your Stone and wire is local, do not touch this.
The other 2 files setup your general network access.

The link below explains what info the OS needs:
https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/flame-products/troubleshooting/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2018/...
http://www.krizna.com/centos/setup-network-centos-7/

To restart the network service use:
[root@par57avid03 /]# cd /etc/init.d/
[root@par57avid03 init.d]# ls
adsk_lvm  functions  netconsole  network  README
[root@par57avid03 init.d]# ./network
Usage: ./network {start|stop|status|restart|reload|force-reload}
[root@par57avid03 init.d]# ./network restart

NOTE: THE SYSTEM WORKS ONLY WITH A FIXED IP ADDRESS, NO DHCP
NOTE: USE THE FIXED IP ADDRESS WHEN SETTING UP THE SYSTEM RATHER THAN A MACHINE NAME.

23. Restart the machine, f9, choose boot hard drive and log in as root.
24. Check you have the internet, that the licence server is working, be it locally or on the network and that all the volumes you need are mounted.
25. Format Volume that will be used for Stone and Wire using the Disks app in the Utilities menu. It took me a few repeated attempts for the PROMISE attached by Thunderbolt to format fully in ext4.

With an OS, network access, a licence server, a volume for the Stone, ...
25. INSTALL THE FLAME. open the folder with the install in the terminal. type ./INSTALL_FLAME
26. Choose network licence server and put in the ip address of the server.
27. Setup Stone and wire on the volume. When finished, restart the machine ...
AND HOPEFULLY THE FLAME WILL WORK.

I hope this helps someone

Thank you for the guide at the last part, that is way more helpful that the other content I was trying to see in here, every article skips most of the crucial options that sure an engineer would have known, but I’m a vfx student eager to learn despite that the software installation and configuration tries to stop you at any cost.

I’m really stucked in the part in which my network doesn’t work and need to make a static IP address and my centos knowledge is pretty limitating.

I don’t know how to get the uuid of my ethernet (tools like KInfocenter don’t display the UUID and the wireless pci card that I have has been disabled by the DKU), can anyone help me to set a static IP and to restablish the internet connection so I can activate the flame product? Any aid will be much appreciated.

You can manually edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-XXXXXX where XXXXXX is the interface name (enp102s0 judging by your screenshot) but if you're not a Linux person it can be confusing. I'm not sure why the GUI is broken (they show up empty on my real system too, but on a virtual machine running Centos 7.2 they work..)

In short you'd make BOOTPROTO=none, set IPADDR=x.x.x.x and GATEWAY=x.x.x.x accordingly, then reboot or restart networking.

But I'd be happy to TeamViewer in and show/help you with it and any other config you might need to get you running.

In my experience, if you see the ethernet interface via KDE, the autodesk version of centos 7.2 install is not right. The Autodesk version of Centos 7.2 is stripped to a minimum and all the networking interface is reduced to terminal only, even if it shows up in the system interface.

What Chicken man writes is right. But in my expierence with the linux, you need a fixed ip number and not just a computer name. Do not let the DHCP router / server feed you one. If you are at home , you will need to check on your router what is range of the DHCP ip numbers. As a rule ,anything above 192.168.0.100 is out of the DHCP range. If you are working in a company, the range will probably be different. If the IP is not set right, there will be conflicts that stop the Stone & Wiretap working which means the flame will not startup.

If you are uncomfortable with the terminal (like me), don't be.

On the proviso that you are logged in under sudo (root user) in the terminal, you can edit the files directly.

For example , to edit the "hosts"  file, you type in the terminal :

cd /etc/

cd means go to folder "etc"

As per the instructions above :

ls means list folder content.

to open the file "hosts", using a terminal text editor, I use pico. I'll leave the pros to suggests others.

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/42980/the-beginners-guide-to-nano-the-linux-command-line-text-editor...

The terminal command to edit the hosts file is

pico hosts

In pico, you can edit the file contents as a root user.

Welcome to the world of the terminal, there is lots to learn and it really helps understand why the flame is the way it is.

I hope this helps
