Hello,
I am the lead developer of Xenko C# Game Engine, recently opensourced under MIT license.
- Website: https://xenko.com
- Github: https://github.com/xenko3d/xenko
We currently use the FBX SDK 2019.0 in our asset toolchain/editor and are happy with it.
When building Xenko, the current workflow is that if our build script detect it is not installed, it will generate a build error with a link to Autodesk FBX SDK page to download it.
However we would like to improve this for two reasons:
- Much more difficult to setup build agents (we can't run out of the box on Azure Pipelines and such cloud services, we need custom dedicated agents to install FBX SDK -- this is much more expensive, esp. considering our limited opensource funds)
- Extra manual step for building project (for initial user and whenever there's a FBX version bump)
Ideally, we would like to embed a copy of FBX SDK (headers and libraries with license.rtf) inside our repository.
After reading the license and answer such as https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/fbx-forum/can-i-post-a-program-to-github-that-uses-the-fbx-sdk-code/m... it seems it is not possible.
As a result, I am kindly asking if we could have a special permission to embed the FBX SDK in our opensource GitHub repository (if necessary, please contact me by email/PM if you want to discuss details further)
Thanks for your consideration, it would improve our daily workflow a lot!
