Performance

Performance

Hi,

We have quite a bit of trouble with the performance of FDU in Inventor.
Even starting the empty FD template takes many seconds.
After placing a number of assets as well as after a modification (FD Properties) of an asset, it takes a long time before the user can continue.
During saving, it often happens that FD crashes.
Hence a plea to Autodesk to pay enough attention to performance!

Hi @hkempeneers ,

Thank you for reporting this issue and yes, our attention is drawn. 😉

Would you please discribe more about your environment? like machine configuration, Inventor version, is vault involved in this equation, assets come from local or a remote server?

If it is possible, I will be happy to have a zoom call with you. Drop us an email and I will schedule. Thank you.

Hi MickeyLi,

Thank you for your response!

Personally, I think it's a great proposition to have a meeting via Zoom or Teams.

Then all your questions about our methods and configurations can be answered at that time.

I will discuss your proposal with my supervisor at friday.

Then we have email contact again after the weekend.

I hope you can agree with this.

Kind regards,

Hi Mickey,

Last Friday the following was decided:

This week WSP will test the performance of FDU again extensively.

We record the results of these tests.

Then I will contact you again for a Teams meeting.

In which we can then discuss the performance of FDU and our test results.

Do you agree?

Kind regards,

Hi @hkempeneers ,

That sounds like a good plan. 1 thing I would like to add here, when you are testing. Please generate the diagnostic file for each test. The method to have diagnostics file generated:

1, Make sure CADs are not running
2, Start Notepad
3, Don't type anything
4, Select "Save"
5, Paste the following, including the double-quotes, into the "file name" field": "%temp%\ADSKFactoryDiagnostics.txt"
6, Hit enter to save the file
7, Start each testing.
8, Close CADs
9, Start Windows Explorer
10, Paste the following into the address bar: %temp%
11, Hit enter
12, Find files with names that start with ADSKFactoryDiagnostics, and save it in a place.
13, After we done all the tests. Delete all files with names that start with ADSKFactoryDiagnostics

Also in this folder if there is ADSKFactoryAnalytics.txt file please also included in the test result. This will give a timely commands list.

Thank you.

Hi Mickey,

In recent days we have extensively tested our assets in FDU.

All test results are included in a schedule (Excel-sheet).

We also made log-files.

You can find these files in the attachment of this email.

We also have videos of the task scheduler of the test-PC.

Do you want them? Can I send them by We Transfer?

To make it clear to you, I will go through what we did step by step below.

1. Embedded Excel

Our FD template has one embedded Excel and one internal Rule. No event triggers.

Nevertheless, opening an empty WSP-FD template takes a lot more time than opening the original AU-FD template.

1. Template WSP/AU

Configuring WSP Assets takes quite some time. Both on the AU and on the WSP template.

That is, the iLogic computation time is short, but it takes a long time for Inventor to have the model ready to continue working. (see 2.1-2.4)

Configuring the AU assets also takes a lot of time. See 2.5 / 2.6.

1. Assets WSP

Configuring WSP Assets does not get much faster when we disable all internal rules of the assets. (3.1-3.3)

Configuring WSP Assets is much faster when the FD connections are removed in the FD layout. (3.4-3.7)

Assets as multi-body parts are much faster than assets as assemblies. (3.8-3.9)

1. Location of Assets

Assets on the network are no faster than local assets.

1. Hardware

See screenrecordings and systeminformation

1. Pack and Go

Opening an assembly from a PackandGo takes just as much time as opening the same assembly in FD.

I hope you are still here..😉

In summary:

- WSP template is slow

- Connections in FD cause slowness.

- The calculation time of the ilogic is only a very small part of the total waiting time when an asset is changed or added in an assy.

- Assets as multi-body parts are much faster than assets as assemblies

- Due to the extremely long waiting times, it is actually impossible to work in an FD layout with more than 20 assets.

Our main question to Autodesk:

- What causes the long waiting times while working in the FD layout?

- Is this slowness going to be fixed by Autodesk?

Awaiting your reply.

Greetings,

Hans Kempeneers
