Problem: Eagle Hangs in Library Editor - Application has to be Killed.

I have a very annoying problem in Eagle 8.0. If I edit a custom library, Eagle suddenly hangs. There is no way out, and if I try to close the library or even the application, I get only a message "Can't close window while command is running!". The only way out is to kill the application - so I lose all unsaved changes to this point.

It seems this happens if I rename symbols or packages, or cloning them in the library. After I switch to another package or symbol, Eagle hangs.

Is this a known problem? Is there any solution?

I have the same issue. Specifically after clicking the "show table of contents" button. The UI is still active in that buttons can be clicked, but they don't do anything. If you try to close the window it says "Can't close window while command is running". It seems to happen pretty consistently when you try to navigate around in the library editor after making a change without saving.

Same here. Eagle 8.0.0 on OS X 10.12.2.

Happened twice in a row. Had to force quit Eagle and lost unsaved changes.

Hello Everyone,

This is a known issue and I have reported it. I was not able to reproduce it in our latest update so once that is released to the public I think the issue will be solved.

If you continue to run into problems after the update, please reach out and we'll look into it again.

The same thing with 8.0.1. Most often it happens when I click "book" button to switch back from symbol or package editor to library TOC. More rarely when I open symbol or package editor from the TOC window.

Hello Everyone,

See the other thread regarding this issue. I need a step by step process to reproduce the issue. If anyone can provide one that will help squash this faster. I see some of the post here give general steps I'll follow those to try to reproduce the error, however a step by step would be more helpful.

Best Regards,
Jorge Garcia

Jorge,

Here is how it happens for me.

1. Save your work, Eagle is going to need to be force quit.

2. Open a library.

3. Click the "Edit package" button in the toolbar. Create a new package.

4. Click the "Edit Symbol" button in the toolbar. Create a new symbol.

5. Click the "Edit Device" button in the toolbar. Create a new device.

At this point the bug usually shows up. You'll nice there is no "add" button like there should be in the toolbar on the right. Trying to close the window says "Can't close window while command is running"

Hi Jorge,

Stop pretending you do not now what is wrong...

Here is what you need to do:

1. Open a new blank library.

2. push button to edit a device > make a name for it.

3. Push button to edit a package > make a name for it.

4. Push any other button (package, device, symbol)

And eagle hangs...  Takes about 10 seconds.

...or even an existing library. Just switch 5-10 times from table of contents to editor and back. You don't even need to change something.

Hi Skot9000,

I can reproduce it, it seems before I just wasn't waiting long enough. I have made a video showing the crash and the developers now have it.

We will be making a second get well release and this one will definitely be addressed in it.

Thank you everyone.

The problem still exists in 8.0.1. It seems some fundamental problem of the user interface. It only happens often in the library because there is some strange delay after each action. It can best be seen after switching to another mode. The status bar needs sometimes longer than a second to finally show up.

Here a demonstration of the problem. A video with a higher frame rate is attached.

This problem still exists with V8.0.2  Its quite upsetting that I just laid out $500 for software that is unusable -  especially after spending $1000 less than 6 months ago before Autodesk took Eagle over.  Please get this fixed.

Hi @Anonymous,

I hope you're doing well, and I'm really sorry for what's going on. I totally understand the frustration your feeling and we are doing everything we can to get this sorted.

Now with 8.0.2, do you get the window that says "Can't close editor window blah blah blah" or are you just getting a straight crash?

It's important to know, because it looks like the same bug can cause either of the two behaviors.

I'll report back as soon as I have more information.

Yes, I'm getting the "Can't close editor window blah blah blah" All of the icons stay in the greyed out state as I click on them... jsut can't close the window and have to force quit loosing all my work. It seems that if I open the library and save immediately then reopen it works ok. I just keep saving and instantly closing to prevent the lock up.
