Import 3D Package

Under the library Table of Contents the Import 3D Package does not have an option to import a step file. I am using Eagle 9.3.1 and can not import a 3d step file. The library is a managed library. I have the Device, Footprint, and symbols setup, but can not import a 3D package without going to the "create with package generator" . The package generator does not have any packages close to what I need to import. I need to be able to import the 3D step file directly and assign it to the device I created.

Do you not have the Upload STEP option showing in the bar across the top in the editor when you right click and choose "Edit" on 3D package like here?

The part I am working with is not a standard IPC listed in the Package manager. It is a 3 pin power connector with wide flat pins. The part is for an external power supply wall transformer to supply power to the board.

I clicked on the "create with package manager" option and had to save the 3D package and then had to edit that package to get the "upload step" option. then when I loaded the step file the board holes and the 3D step file would never work. Two completely different designs. The board does not update to the correct hole shape of the 3D step file.

Not surprised, but wanted to try.

I need to be able to import the 3D file directly.

Yep that's fine, I do this all the time, you can still upload a STEP file when the package isn't created with the package manager.

Yes, it does not work like this.

So what you do is:

1) Create the footprint for the part in your (managed) library.

2) Choose Library->Create new version....

3) Edit the new 3D Package which would have been created with step 2 above.

4) Upload the STEP file and position it correctly on the board.

Here is an example of a completely custom (i.e. not created with the IPC generator) part I created recently:

So it can be done, you just need to have go through the right steps.

As an aside, you don't need to make your libraries completely managed in order to achieve this, you only need a single managed library specifically for managing footprints/3P packages which can then be copied to regular libraries and used as normal.
