I am using 8.4.3 on Linux and I cannot open schematic files created with 7.4.0 a year ago. When I double click on the schematic file, the board opens. When I try to toggle to the schematic, nothing happens. There is no error dialog. A quick validation of the sch XML using Python did not indicate any errors.
I have attached a zip containing the offending sch/brd combo.
I just loaded your design in 8.4.3 and it is fine, I can load both the sch and brd and switch between them. I'd try closing everything down and starting everything up again to see if it was just a weird glitch in the system. If it still doesn't work for you then maybe look at moving the files to a different location to rule out it being something strange that it doesn't like about the location you currently have them.
