Can't move components

Hi,

I just upgraded to Eagle Standard because I needed a larger board size. I loaded my design, expanded the size of the board and was starting to move everything where it needed to be. I got interrupted so I saved the file and now after opening it I can't move any components without an error message. This includes components that were where they belonged in the initial design. So I opened another file that hadn't been saved and it is working fine. What the heck did I screw up? BTW I checked the t and b Origins layers and they are on.

Thanks in advance,

The inability to place components with negative coordinates is a very recent bug which breaks a lot of existing board designs. For example, this one I made in October 2019. The origin is under the mouse cursor, by the D in the second line of text.

The issue OP described isn't entirely explained by the positive-coordinates-only bug, however. I just created a new design and still can't place half of my components.

Same here. Crappy product. Also the tool selection sucks. Not a good experience.

Hi @Anonymous ,

I hope you're doing well. Could you provide more background about what you are seeing? Any unpaid version of EAGLE has this board size limitation implemented this way. It's always been that way in EAGLE.

If you are running into anything else, I encourage you to start a new thread and I'll be happy to help.

I'm starting Eagle, but I've never worked on it before. In the past, PCAD, Accel, Protel, Altium, OrcAD, Zuken.

I must do very quickly amendments.

I stacked on simple problem.  I am not allowed to move components on the PCB. First, it was problematic to find how to hook component. But now I am moving components, rotate them with right click, but I cannot drop them with left click.
It seems this operation is blocked.
But why?
I am registered user. I was granted with licenses to many Autodesk components, including Eagle.
When I try some example, this is working properly. It seems like the design which I am working on is somehow fixed, or the operation is limited because I crossed number of parts. Sometimes the window encouraging me to buy Fusio360 is popping out, but when I follow it, it shows me that I am already a user, I don't need to buy anything ot to install anything,

Hi @Anonymous,

If you are talking about the PDMC collection, that does not contain EAGLE anymore. Could you confirm that's what you are talking about?

I'm having this problem with a really important old PCB and is really annoying that there is not any kind of useful answer by AutoDesk, I place everything in positive coordinates and it doesn't let me replace any device, is a PCB of 101 mm X 80 mm. I'm a student and I don't have money to pay for the license I found this really disgraceful, annoying, and disrespectful with the work of the people.

Really? You demand that you get stuff for free, then claim that being expected to pay for the years of hard work that other people put in to a product is "disrespectful with the work of the people"? Are you a communist, or just unbelievably self-centred?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a very strong advocate of the Free Software movement, but what you're demanding isn't reasonable.

Agreed. Fusion360 is a great piece of software. I had the paid version for
a year for the sake of doing multilayer PCBs, but since I've changed jobs,
I no longer need it. The inability to position components in the negative
x,y quadrants is a minor inconvenience that can be overcome by placing your
board outline in the positive quadrant. Being limited to only two layers is
far more of an inconvenience for me, but for now, I will live with it (I'm
only using it for hobby projects, so multi layer isn't
absolutely necessary). If you're a student, check if your university has an
academic licence to F360/Eagle or something similar. You could try KiCad
too. I think the OPs post is just a sign of frustration.
Stick with it. Plan your PCB on paper before jumping into the software. Now
you know of this placement limitation, I'm sure you'll find a way to work
around it.

Hello,

I have the free version of eagle 9.6.2 and I am having this same problem. I began my day being able to move components, then I add a few to the design and now I cannot move any. If I open an different project, I can move the components there. I have tried moving the board edges to the origin to solve this problem. But I do not know how to solve it. Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

Kepa

Which is more likely - the observation that parts could be moved to negative coordinates, which I ave routinely been able to do, vs your assertion that it has never been possible?

People are saying that they are having (new) problems with existing boards and your saying - its always been that way. What do you mean by "I'll be happy to help". You mean give. another dismissive comment?

Not exactly an encouragement to get the license is it?  His point is valid - license or not.  There is no helpful information to resolve issues with any Autodesk product.  I found it impossible to even get the license

Hi @phybmd ,

I hope you're well. By chance did you respond to the wrong thread? You just posted to a thread that has been inactive for almost 2 years. Currently, EAGLE is no longer for sale on it's own and will be end of life on June 7,2026. For now you can still use EAGLE by obtaining a Fusion entitlement.

If you can't move components in your current design, I encourage you to open a new thread and post details about your design to help figure out what can be going on.
