Opening a standard version Eagle file in free version - size limitations?

Hello,

I'm using a paid/standard version of Eagle 7.7.0.

I have a board that covers approximately 400 sq cm.

I wanted to get a freelancer to handle some of the initial layout - but the person I'm talking to is using the free/size-limited version (80 sq cm).

Can anyone tell me what happens if you open a standard file that exceeds the size limits of the free version? Just want to get an idea of what to expect and whether it can be made to work before we ask them to look at it.

Thanks!

/ J

The free version can open and display big boards no problem. In some limited ways, it might even be able to make small edits, e.g. to silk screen layers. Possibly, you might be able to adjust some aspects of some traces. I can't say without testing (and I'm not at the right PC at the moment) whether it will let you do any routing. What it definitely will not allow is moving any part that's outside the free limits (or probably any part). It shouldn't crash or corrupt anything if you try this, just pop up a "not allowed" error box and force you to cancel the operation.

If they are selling their services as a freelancer then they should pay for a Standard/Premium license when they need to do EAGLE work as the free version is for non-commercial use only....

I concur. If someone is selling their services, they need to pay for a month's subscription and add it to your bill. You also may want to question, if they don't have the pro version, are they the person you want doing your work?

I am not affiliated with Autodesk. I am a subscriber to the professional edition of Eagle and I've used Autodesk products for >20 years. The username displayed is the first half of the e-mail address I use to communicate with this forum, wherein I use ([email protected]) so it lands in my catch-all and I can pinpoint any entity who sells me out to the spam world. 🙂 I hope my contributions benefit others as much as the contributions of others have benefited me. Good luck with your project!

Very true. I certainly wasn't condoning use of the free version for unlicensed purposes. However, it was established in the Cadsoft days that use of the free version for limited intermediary purposes (e.g. a board house making Gerbers from Eagle data) is OK. That won't cover a freelancer doing layout for you, though!
