Can Eagle PCB import netlist from another schematic capture, like OrCAD? Thanks, Jerry

Hi @Anonymous,

I hope you're doing well. At this point we don't have an official tool to import an OrCAD netlist. However, several users over the years have developed different ULPs to import those types of files. I encourage you to try them out although there is no guarantee that they will work because they are user contributed.

You can check them out here.

Please accept as solution if my post fully resolves or you issue, or reply with additional details if the problem persists.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Best Regards,

jorge.garcia thanks for your response.

The goal is not to import a "Orcad Netlist". The goal is to export a netlist from Orcad schematic in a netlist format for Eagle.

I have have used Orcad to generate a netlist format to import into Pads. I have have used Orcad to generate a netlist format to import into Mentor Expedition.

The real question is "Can Eagle import any text/ascii based netlist?"

Thanks, Jerry

Hi @Anonymous,

I hope you're doing well. EAGLE can't import just any text/ascii netlist. Here's a list of import/export options for EAGLE. It's a little old, so there may be newer ULPs available but it should give you an idea of what's possible.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

Hi Jerry --

Is this something you need to do more frequently?  If so, I'd like to prioritize the netlist import from OrCAD a little higher on our development roadmap.  I know there are some 3rd party solutions in ULPs but we have this on our "list" of stuff to get to.  I would be keen to move that up the list if there's an appetite for this path from OrCAD schematic to EAGLE PCB.  (We were thinking of this more as a path to get 3rd party content into the system)

Also, what version of OrCAD?  I've been toying with a straight OrCAD import (much harder to build) but this would take some time.  I want to try and understand also what versions of OrCAD data the community is using.

Best regards,

Being able to import OrCAD and Allegro layouts would be a huge win for us. This opens up the ability to re-use vendor reference designs instead of starting from scratch (which are typically in Cadence formats).

Hey Matt. Thanks for the response.

Most of my past customers use 9.1 or 9.2 OrCAD. Most of the customers I deal with start their own schematics and I edit them to generate netlists. 100% of my past designs have started with OrCAD schematics, generate Netlist and ended in either Pads or Mentor Expedition.

I'm shopping for new layout tool, so the ability to import a Netlist "file" versus importing a previous layout database is priority. My past customers do not have a layout, but have started their own designs in schematic capture.

And so, which is the solution?

I have the same problem with my consultant that makes the schemiatic using orcad 9...

I tryed to download other ULP, but not work... it's very strange, becaudsre orcad is a historical CAD... and so it need to make compatibility to the most common cad...
