Run TrueView without admin rights

Is there a way to get this program to work for users that do not have admin rights?

I do not allow Admin rights for any of my users. We would love to use this program for our Estimators and Project Managers that only need to view and plot drawings.

Wow, after 4 years we might finally have a free viewer for DWG's again...

Now *that's* progress.

PS. Good to see Autodesk are still sticking with the 'ever shrinking post' look. Always did like that

PPS. Whoops, forgot the tags, sorry

PPPS. Sorry Scott, not a dig at you personally, you do a cracking job replying to these forums. Autodesk as a whole are just getting on my nerves with their software these days. We can still run AutoCAD but that's about it, it's been backward progress since 2000.

PPPPS. Heh, site stripped out the -sarcasm- tags without telling me.

That is definitely good news, I think you said you were going to put something on your blog concerning the release, but will this be offered as an update when you are actually running True View in the same manner as the DWF viewer "a newer version is available" or will it be a separate download you have to download and install instead?

Did you miss the previous version of DWG TrueView that was released last
year?

Quite possibly. I was aware of the DWG converter program, but hadn't seen trueview. We hadn't been looking for it since we'd been told by Autodesk when they discontinued Volo View Express that they had no plans to release future DWG viewers.

Even had we known about the software, it looks doubtful we'd have been able to run it. We're still waiting for Autodesk to patch this version so that it can work on the network...

He didn't miss it. Autodesk DWG TrueView is based on AutoCAD OEM. AutoCAD
OEM had a defect where a user must have admin rights to run. This is not how
Autodesk DWG TrueView 2007 was designed. So the AutoCAD OEM team corrected
this defect. The Autodesk DWG TrueView team then incorporated the new OEM
into DWG TrueView. An update was built, tested, and regression tested. The
updated TrueView then needs to undergo localization testing in a variety of
countries. All of this takes time. This user needs Autodesk DWG TrueView
2007 to run without requiring admin rights. He is growing impatient, but all
of this is happening as fast as it can. People are working nights, holidays,
and weekends.

This will not be an update. It will be a new version that is posted on the
web. Users who experience a problem will need to come and get it. Users who
are unaffected by issues like the admin issue can stick with the one they
have.

Scott,

I didn't want to start a new thread... though you mention that there will be a few other fixes going on as well.

One fix I hope that's not overlooked:

Tools->Options under Files tab;
-goto Text editor, Dictionary, and Font File names;
-goto Font Mapping File;

On install:
C:\documents and settings\user\application data\autodesk\dwg trueview 2007\r3\enu\support\

Should be:
C:\documents and settings\user\application data\autodesk\dwg trueview 2007\r3\enu\support\dwgviewr.fmp

I don't know if that is in there. You can check it out when the new version
comes out.

Scott,

Thanks for the reply. Though, it would really be nice to have it already set up upon install. There was a similiar defect with AutoCAD LT 2004 where the file location pointed to acad.fmp instead of aclt.fmp.

I understand that the AutoView development team is very close to the release of the updated viewer and it was my hope to inform them with this information before the release.

I also understand that even though it may seem like a easy fix it might also be more trouble then it's worth and delay the release even longer....which is something I think nobody really wants.

Again thanks for the responses.

Ok, I've downloaded and installed it, it's much better then the first version, it now is possible to use it, if you don't mind a repair after every time your users have logged off. (we use the MSI like most (if not all) companies do, not the setup.exe)

The problem is caused by the check for roaming or local profile. Installations in a network environment, usually have installations preformed by the system account, or by an account with administrator rights on the workstations. These accounts NEVER have roaming profiles!

The user who starts the program, does have a roaming profile. Most big organizations use high security (bank, governments) which means deleting the local profile after a user logs off. Since the detection during first installation sees "no roaming", the template files are written in "*Profile*\local settings\application data\autodesk", and that directory "*Profile*\local settings" is excluded from roaming by default. Why all other files are saved in "*Profile*\application data\autodesk", and just the templates (about 800kB) in the "local settings", I do not understand.
I've fixed it using a transform in the following way:
Remove the condition ("Roaming="1") from entry "DIRCA_SETROAMING" in the "InstallExecuteSequence" table, to always make it run. Change the condition (Roaming = "0") to "0" for the entry "DIRCA_SETLOCAL" in the "InstallExecuteSequence" table, to prevent it from running. In the "CustomAction" table for the entry "DIRCA_LOCALUSERFILESFOLDER", change in the "Target" the part "[LOCALAPPDATAFOLDER]" to "[APPDATAFOLDER]".

I would advise to save ALL userdata in the "*Profile*\Application Data" in future builds.

Kind Regards,

It has been equally frustrating for us as well. Autodesk really needs to have their ducks in a row before releasing software. This has cost us plenty and caused me a lot of grief.

Manfred538, do you have that transform file that you could send me. It is pretty neat that you found all that out.. I have the same problem but I'm not about to learn Orca at this point.. it would be greatly appreciated.

Welp, it's 2022 - almost 2023, and TrueView doesn't run without admin rights.

Thanks a lot, Autodesk.
