Visibility Issues

Hey All,

New to Fusion, have been on solidworks and Rhino for the better part of 10 years. I have inserted components into an "assembly" file. I'm trying to change the visibility of a sketch, but when I hover over the light bulb icon I get this pop-up "visibility cannot be changed because it's reda-only in referenced documents". See image below

-Where can I find the "referecne documents" to change this?

Second question about referenced documents

-Can I edit a component in-context of an "assembly file"

Thanks for the help in advance,

Hi Phil,

If you RMB on the Component that contains that sketch, it has the link next to the name, you should have the option to open the file.  More than likely when you first uploaded the assembly it also created a few designs that contain all of the files shown in here that have the link next to the name.  Once the file is open you can change the visibility of the sketch and then save the file.  Once you go back into the original design it will let you know that there is an update.

Right now we don't have the ability to change the visibility in-context of an "assembly file", but it is something we are actively tracking and working on.  Optimally it would be great if you could control the visibility as well as a number of other factors from the top level assembly.

Hope this helps, any other questions please let us know.

Cheers,

Hi Phil,

The referenced document in this case would be the file your have inserted into your assembly. You can tell by the chainlink icon before the component name in the browser on the left.

I don't know of a way currenly to modify refferenced components in situ. To edit a referenced file you can right click in in the browser and choose open (you could then turn on the sketch you want to be visible and save a new version > return to your assembly file and choose to update references > you should then see the sketch.)

To edit the file in situ you can unlink the reference file. To do so right click the component in the browser and choose 'Break Link'. However any updates and changes you then make won't be reflected in the file of the single component.  Fusion is a bit different to solidworks in that there is no distincition between part files and assembly files.

I hope that helps

Niels

Is the changing of visibility of linked features on the roadmap? I link many components in my designs and I frequently have to include their base components to be able to easily reference their geometry. So if I have :
original -> custom 1 -> custom 1 referenced
and want to hide the changes in the original part I can't hide the changes in custom 1 and just view the linked design "original" I can show and hide "original" or the entire "custom 1" design but I can't just hide the features from "custom 1" as this would be just hiding a body which is not allowed in a linked component. The workaround as stated is to link "original" in "custom 1 referenced" however I feel that this could be improved upon.

Thanks

Yes, this is on the roadmap, and in fact is in progress.  We realize that this workflow is not ideal, and will correct it soon.  I'm not sure exactly when it will make its way through the release process, but hopefully it won't be too long.

This would be great to have, but I couldn't find this on idea-station, so I submitted it as a suggestion here

Any update on this? It's very frustrating having to re-open linked parts just to change the visibility when working in larger assemblies.

Bump. This seems to have been in progress for a couple years now. I'd love to see this functionality improved.

Also hoping that it's going to be fixed....

@SwarmJon @JosiahTullis I would like to have this functionality as well.

However, the reason I am addressing you two in this post is that many if not most  new users of Fusion 360, CAD newbies as well as Veterans alike, overuse linked/external companies and often using linked components is not needed at all, so this problem can be avoided.

760 days later, This is really terrible for workflow.  If I'm assembling parts with lots or origins or construction planes, I have to go into each file and turn them on.  Then update the assembly that references them.  Then I have a mess of construction planes that can't be toggled OFF unless I go back into those files, turn them off, and then update the files again!  And what happens when another student/team is working on that other part?  Now I have to bother them to turn the planes on and off so I can assemble things.  Imagine working with programming code and having to save and update files just to change the visibility of line numbers or comments.

Why does visibility of imported objects need to be changed in the reference?

I'd much rather be allowed to toggle visibility of objects/construction planes/bodies (and for that matter, rendering material assignments) in the assembly, and then have those attributes reset if I need to get an updated version of the reference.

Any other program that imports files with layers would at least let you toggle visibility.

Any progress on this?
It's about 2 years old now ... and I've still the same problem. It's really a very bad workflow ...

This must be addressed. This is one of the most time-costing issues I have with fusion360. Don't get me wrong, I love the product, but a VISIBILITY FIX must be on the roadmap ASAP!!!!

@marc.a.grossman: And braking the link is not an option?

Bump!
How is this still a thing? What a mess using referenced designs is, and now with Eagle boards being added in the mix it creates even more hurdles.
No to turn on/off the origin or whatever else, the reference board needs to be opened, visibility set, then saved. That in turns sets the file out of date with the associated Eagle board and requires an additional pull to get everything synced.

All that just to change the display, nothing that actually affects the design.
These are the kind of workflow issues that make Fusion 360 truly a practice in patience.
