Just wanted to share this piece which was a result of my curiosity to see what could been done with a bitmap image I had download.
First, the image was used as a Decal wrapped almost half way around a cylinder.
This was rendered in a front orthographic to get the highest contrast image possible. (This image now has the necessary distortion)
That rendered image was put into photoshop, scaled 400%, cropped, and whatever adjustments needed to get a black on white image. Saved a .jpg.
Opened the image in Inkscape and used Path/TraceBitmap. Made one change in the dialogue box, input .540 for the threshold.
Exported this as a .svg file and Inserted it into Fusion and scaled it to fit match the Decal.
Extrude... Splitface....Push/Pull faces.
Here's the result:
After completing that, it occurred to me that it could have more shape, basically by wrapping each part in a T-spline body, then pull each face out through these T-spine bodies, and do a Combine/Intersect.
Here's the result:
The following piece is another similar case where a bitmap of text was wrapped around a cylinder. In this case it (the decal) was rendered from four sides to get the images with the required distortion. After editing them in PS they where made into four .svg files in Inkscape.
In this piece we see that the 'Together Forever' thing didn't work out:
