Drawings/dimensioning

Hi!

I have got some problems to get proper dimensions of compenents in drawings, if the original body hasn't been modelled perpendicular to origin planes. Also difficult/impossible to get diameter dimensions to drawings in the same circumstances.

Is there some technique to get the proper dimensioning done or have I missed some detail? I have tried to make a duplicate of the component and rotated it as vertical/horizontal, but it's far too difficult way...

In the model workspace select the face you want to look straight at in the drawing, then click Look At, icon's at the bottom of the screen. Then in the browser right click Named Views and create a New Named View.

When you create the base view in the drawing select the aligned view as the orientation.

When adding dimensions to the drawing the multi dimension tool doesn't work so you have to use the basic dimension tools.

Thank's! Hope, that this is not the "final" solution how to dimension this kind components/constuctions... Still can't add centermarks to holes etc....

But anyhow, this solution is better than nothing!

Hi 0502880,

Currently the method Mark outlined (thank you Mark!) is the way to accurately dimension geometry like this in your drawing.  We do have plans on the roadmap (timing TBD) to implement Auxiliary views in drawings and that will ultimately solve this.  For the issues you saw in the named view, we're currently working on making the single dimension, centerline and center mark tools more tolerant of planar drawing geometry that isn't modeled perpendicular to the origin planes.

One thing to keep in mind (as shown n the pdf you attached) dimensioning to non-planar geometry in the drawing view will result in dimension values for the 2D projection of that line in the view, not the actual 3D distance.

Thanks,

Chris

Nice to hear, that improvements also to the drawings are on their way! Altough 3D printing is strongly present, there is still a lot of projects which needs proper drawings! Please find enclosed my next headache to get dimensioning to the slot. Any ideas how to do it?

Is that slot tapered? It's hard to tell what's going on with the 15.59, 14.78, and 16.1 dimensions. If it's not tapered, the "Aligned Dimension" tool should work.

If you're using the Muli dimension tool just moving the mouse in the direction you want will change it's orientation. After you've placed the dimension I don't think there a way to change between linear and aligned so you'll need to delete the dimensions you have and add new ones.

Mouse pointer moved to the right makes an aligned dimension.

Thank's for the answer. The problem is, that the original componenent hasn't been parallel to origin planes... So I have first used your "trick" to make named wiev first and after that made the drawing with that wiev. So the "automatic" dimension tool won't work...

Did you try an Aligned dimension and selecting the line end points.

Yes, it gives better result; but not the accurate one. Probably because there is also 5 deg angle to the other direction... But let's live with that until next upgrade 😉

Hi 0502880,

Could you send me that design?  With the design open expand the File menu > Export... > Type "Archive Files (*.f3d) then save it locally and email it to christopher dot miller at autodesk dot com.  I'd like to take a look at the design and how we can dimension it, and make sure whatever shortcomings we havea are entered in the system as either bugs or (more likely) future feature work.

Thanks,
Chris
