Multi axis profiling machines for Steel work

Hi, 

 

so coming from a steel work background, the old way was to cut it with a flame torch, or crop it out using a metalworker,   even for shape tune ends,  there are specialist machines to scallop out the end of the tube so the match up with the attaching section  ( tube handrails)

 

We sort of moved to laser profiling some years back,  create for sheet/plate work,    even some beam work,   water jet etc.    Now we have multi axis profiling machines that rely upon G Codes etc.  using their own software to interact with the machine from the generated part as a Step or Iges file. 

 

So what's the preference now for delivering the project of steelworks in the prep stage of a project to the supplier or to your own shop for production,  Traditionally it was always NC files,  but with the shift to more automation of the pre-production methods,  should system be offering more integrated back end solutions direct from the modelling platform, rather than running thought  a post processing tools for MIS/ERP etc.

 

should those output focus upon them being a Step file of the component to allow for fuller integration. 

 

Inventor is separate to Say Advance Steel, but users still do Steel in inventor, they have export methods to steop/iges direct G codes to tool centers.   Advance Steel you can get 3rd party tools to extend the ability to export in Step/Iges at a component and model level.

 

Just wondering if anyone had a preference and a reason why,   Have the move from DSTV NC Standard now required,  should Steel software offer  Iges/Step as standard export method.    should there be some form of director export method to integrate directly to machine centre.    ( i call that a CAM interpreter file to take my XML Data and then convert that to relative G Code for work-center.)

 

Thoughts anyone?
