How do I wrap text to suface? Also, bug report

How do I wrap text to a surface, as shown in this video?

Also, bug report that when I try to move the text after rotating it rotates back.

Thanks

Luke

See:  tip-tuesday-how-to-create-embossed-letters-in-fusion-360/ba-p/4944332 for a tutorial about how to wrap text and emboss it.

Thanks for reporting the bug.  We will fix it.

I was able to reproduce it in our current production release. I am happy to report that the text dragging bug is fixed in our main build, which will be released very soon.

Hi Jeff,

I can't extrude to a cylinder. It doesn't solve.

Also, this workflow isn't quite wrap & etch, hopefully this will be implimented down the road. 🙂

The Extrude to a cylinder problem, I think, is because your string extends beyond the edge of the cylinder (it's a little hard to tell from the screencast).  For a "to" termination, the extension of the profile must completely intersect the selected face.

And, you are right, this is not "wrap and etch" (or "emboss").  Yes, this will be addressed in the future, I'm just not sure when.  There is an (admittedly tedious) workaround for the short term:  Use Project To Surface to do the wrapping of curves to your surface (you have to Explode the text to curves before you can wrap it).  Once the curves are wrapped to the surface, use Split Face to imprint the curves on the face.  Unfortunately, you have to do this one at a time.  Once the curves are imprinted, you can use Press/Pull (selecting "New Offset" as the type) to either inset or extend the faces while keeping the geometry.

Here is a similar workflow shown (but for circles, not for text):  curving-a-slab

The workplane for the sketch is well above the cylinder. Is that what you mean?

I've had issues with "to" extrudes in the past, I think I made a quick thread about it previously? Maybe not, hard to remember. 🙂

I was referring to whether the text string extends beyond the cylinder.  For example:

text ext 1.png

this string will project to the cylinder fine:

text ext 2.png

But this one:

text ext 3.png

hangs over the cylinder.  But, that generates a different error than you are getting:

text ext 4.png

I have not been able to reproduce your problem.  If you want to share your model or attach it, I'll take a look at it

Hi Jeff, no, the text does not extend over the edge.

What's your email?

Did you try to do this with an extruded cut instead of a join?

In that example I was using the yellow cylinder as a "stop" so I wouldn't cut all the way through the ring. 🙂

Yes, it took me a while to figure out what you were doing there, but it definitely made sense to use that cylinder as a stop. I did try a cut. But, I may not have put the sketch in the exact same orientation as yours, or something else slightly different.

My email is jeff.strater@autodesk.com if you want to share the model.

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi Everyone,

Here is a simple(er) way to get embossed or de-bossed text to wrap around a cylinder using the Split Face command....
