Is there an easy way to create a chamfer on a hex just like a bolt head?

There is a Chamfer tool on the Modify menu, then just select all the edges or are you after something that looks different.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply.  The below picture is what I want.  currently I create a cylinder at the end of the hex and then do a "draft" to make the angle.

Anyone have a better method?

Hello alan,

There are several ways to make this chamfer, but the Draft solution works pretty good. The angle for illustrative purposes is 30°.

I'm assuming here that importing a 3D CAD model does not work for your design.

The complete bolt is an imported STEP file. The models available are very detailed. The head on the right is with the 30° Draft.

Hope is of any help.

Best regards,

Ludo

That's quite a clever way of adding that chamfer. Your other option is a revolve cut. Although a revolve cut seems more work it has the advantage of being parametric so changing the hexagon will update the chamfer. If you're using a few of these how about setting up a bolt template file, you just insert then break the link and edit the sizes. I've attached an example, below are the parameters for the bolt. The head thickness ratio is not quite right but probably close enough.

Another option is to make copies of the template to your project and edit the copies to the sizes you want then insert and keep the link, then you edit the external files if needed.

Where is the parameter menu located? I've been needing/wanting it for ages!

Thanks! I appreciate it. I knew I saw it somewhere, but just couldn't place it.
