Hello APS Community,
I am looking for guidance on the most reliable and efficient automated workflow to convert .dwg files containing 3D solids into web-ready glTF or GLB files. The final destination for these models is a Three.js-based web application. I am planning to use Autodesk Platform Services (APS) for this pipeline and will need to license the necessary services.
I have already done some research and have the following understanding:
- Direct conversion of DWG files to glTF/GLB with a single APS API call is not straightforward, especially for 3D solids.
- A multi-step process is likely necessary, and this is where I need the community's expertise.
My primary challenges and questions are:
- 3D Solid to Mesh Conversion: What is the most effective and reliable APS-based method for converting complex 3D solids within a .dwg file into a clean polygonal mesh? For example, is a pre-processing step using the Design Automation API required to execute a command like MESHSMOOTH before the Model Derivative API can be used?
- Conversion Workflow: What is the recommended sequence of APS API calls? Is the flow DWG (with solids) → DWG (with meshes, via Design Automation) → OBJ (via Model Derivative) → glTF/GLB (using a custom script or a different tool)?
- Material and Texture Handling: How can materials, colors , and textures be best preserved and exported through this workflow? Do I need to make specific adjustments in the Design Automation step or within the export settings to retain this data?
- Licensing Cost Estimation: For a large-scale commercial application, we need to understand the potential costs. What is the typical Cloud Credit expenditure for a multi-step process like this? Any guidance on which services will be heavily utilized would be highly valuable for our budgeting.
- Alternative Approaches: Is there an alternative or more robust APS-based workflow that I am not considering? Are there any official recommendations or examples for this specific DWG to glTF conversion pipeline?
I appreciate any and all insights from the developers who have tackled this specific challenge. Thank you for your help.
