OpenTimelineIO Now Natively Supported in RV

In continuing our efforts to adopt open standards in the industry, we are excited to announce that we now have native support for OpenTimelineIO – or OTIO for short, in RV!

What is OpenTimelineIO?

OpenTimelineIO (OTIO) is an open-source initiative under the umbrella of the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) which aims to be an open interchange format and series of API’s to handle editorial cut information. Think of OTIO as a modernized Edit Decision List (EDL) that includes an API for reading, writing, and manipulating editorial data.

Currently, OTIO supports various aspects of the pipeline such as: clips, timing, tracks, transitions, markers, metadata, amongst other valuable information. This initiative is one of the solutions relied on by the Media & Entertainment industry for timeline interchange.

What is Open Source and What Does it Mean for the Industry?

Open source is a type of licensing agreement that allows users to freely modify a piece of work, integrate it into a project, or create something entirely new inspired by that work. The aim is to remove the barriers between innovators in the community, promoting the free exchange of ideas in order to drive change and advancement.

Autodesk is committed to advancing open source, and open standards more generally. We view open standards as an essential part of how the Media & Entertainment world can meet the challenges of the boom in new content. Open standards like OCIO and OTIO help remove friction and pain points in workflows up and down the pipeline.

What does OTIO Look Like in RV?

This feature allows RV to natively load the content referenced in an OTIO file, set up the information in the RV graph, and preserve the meta data it finds.

The OTIO implementation also has a set of API calls and callback events so that teams can hook into the events, write any custom handlers they require, and support custom schemas they’ve developed in OTIO.

Users can directly open an OTIO file from the File>Open Menu.

Alternatively, you can use the File>Import>OTIO method.
