I’d like to propose an idea that I believe would significantly improve the workflow when working with section views in Civil 3D — especially in detailed urban design where flexibility and precision are crucial.
Main Idea: Editable Section Views with Persistent AutoCAD Objects
It would be extremely useful if section views allowed manual addition of AutoCAD objects (lines, polylines, points, blocks, etc.) that are automatically "anchored" to the section view, meaning:
When the section view is moved or adjusted, all manually added objects move with it.
This would allow users to sketch, annotate, or overlay custom design elements that remain logically tied to the section view.
Advanced Labeling Functionality
A major enhancement would be the ability to:
Automatically label manually added objects (e.g., polylines or lines) if they are on a specified layer.
Add a custom band (like existing section bands) that reads and displays:
This would dramatically improve the documentation and reporting process for custom design elements in section views.
Point Placement and Transfer to Profile View
Another powerful feature would be:
The ability to manually place Cogo Points or similar in section views and have a single command that projects them into the profile view at the correct chainage and elevation.
Or, alternatively, generate a surface from these points directly.
Summary
These features would bring more dynamic and practical editing capabilities to section views, reduce repetitive manual work, and allow designers to fully utilize section views not just for visualization, but as a working design canvas.
