Lock Corridors

Lock Corridors

The ability to lock corridors (as you can with surfaces) would be a great feature. The dynamic aspect to Civil 3D is fantastic for optioneering and during detailed design but once the final design is completed then you need the ability to lock the design down. This is one of the biggest criticisms of highway design in Civil 3D from Bentley MX users. This issue is linked to the sharing of subassemblies where a user without the latest subs could open a corridor, rebuild it and corrupt it.

The instability of corridors means:

  • To extract 3D polylines for setting out, or solids or data the corridor must be rebuilt first.
  • Corridor Sections in Section Views that reference the corridor can become corrupted.
  • Holes in the corridor surface can appear.
  • Combined surfaces where multiple surfaces are pasted in can become corrupted.
  • Where ‘Drape’ corridors have been used to create surface profiles, their dynamic rebuilding results in unnecessary processing.
  • A locked corridor could make it easier to issue to external parties without needing to issue subassemblies too.

General question - If you had the ability to DREF a corridor, would that cover the core requirement? In other words, user can edit the corridor in the source drawing but then all downstream operations (surface creation, feature line extraction, sections, etc) would use a DREF. That lets you keep file size down while also eliminating the possibility of unwanted editing of the corridor.

Ability to DREF would be a useful addition and mean you wouldnt have to have a large corridor file as an XREF to cut section views, however it wouldnt solve Corridors wanting to be rebuilt.

Currently you can XREF a Corridor in a DWG so you can cut Section Views and it will generally sample the corridor, however on occasion the corridor section will not appear if the corridor requires a rebuild (usually caused by someone opening the corridor file and saving it without rebuilding the corridor). Ability to lock all objects like you can lock surfaces would be great and help manage WIP and Shared states a bit better.

One of the new features of Civil 3D 2017 is the ability to make a data reference to a corridor object. This will allow you so share the corridor with others that just need to consume the corridor for cross sections of plans production without them needing the whole corridor model.

This isn't actually implemented. The idea is to lock a corridor so that it can't be rebuilt without unlocking it. Making corridors a data shortcut doesn't do what was asked.

Yes I agree, the lock corridor idea isnt implemented and is really needed to improve DWG performance.

I'm OK with changing this back to accepted. That said, the ability to DREF a corridor gives organizations a new approach that addresses the problems listed above. You can also opt to turn the corridor auto-update to off to prevent unwanted updates within the source corridor drawing.

So in this case, the Idea is to have a specific Lock flag on the corridor.

Added to product backlog... Note - suggest people assess impact of having DREF corridor capability can be part of the answer to this idea.
