It was Google

Autodesk and Google could not agree on licensing terms.

Autodesk switched to Bing.

I know, but they need to negotiate this back. Google has much better and updated aerial photos.

And if/when they do, how many out there will complain about the fact that they raised the price to pay Google their licensing fee?

Absolutely @doni49 - I'd rather let the people who need "feature x" (in this case, high quality aerial images), pay for those features and not saddle all users with the extra cost. We have an external source for high quality aerial images, shape files, etc., so including this in C3D and charging extra for it - is a waste for us.

Maybe they could include the functionality in the software but charge Autodesk cloud credits for it?

Bing is essentially unuseable for us. Not only is the quality poor, Bing aerials are not updated within a reasonable timeframe for civil industry use. Subdivision construction phasing can take, what 3-5 years typically?

Below is a typical example of a subdivision where Bing can't keep up, and Google can..with much better imagery. The third image shows the same subdivision again, but with the FEMA WMS data connection turned on. The imagery becomes distorted.

We recieved much less value in Civil 3D when the decision was made to switch to Bing. It's been 4 years now, the negotiation environment may be totally different. You are just assuming it will be cost prohibitive for some reason.

You are assuming that Google is even willing to negotiate.  They are under no compulsion to cooperate with AutoDesk - they could simply tell them to bugger off (using business terms, of course).  Even if you find that not acceptable thats the way it is.

There are other providers out that that will have imagery the same age or maybe even newer than Google.

IOW - you're not required to use the Bing data.

That aside, you should start a grass roots campaign. Get all your co-workers, friends, relatives, etc. to sign up and vote this up, getting it to the top of this list - that would help a lot.

What?  Other sources aren't geo-referenced.

Bing maps are not up to date and have inferior resolutions than other sources.  Then Autodesk is forced to put a Courtesy stamp on all maps that show up when you plot them.  And really? We should start a grass roots campaign to get what we payed for already?

It's common sense that Autodesk needs to do a deal with the best imagery provider available since we pay the most for their civil and mapping cad software that's available.  Autodesk is being cheap. I think they are still pissed off at Google for forcing Autodesk to pull their Publish to Google Earth feature a few years ago.  Time to reconcile with google guys.

As I stated earlier, "let the people who need "feature x" (in this case, high quality aerial images), pay for those features and not saddle all users with the extra cost."

Of course there are other sources for hi-quality geo-referenced imagery. We use them every day. They are just not free.

Respectfully....We already pay for it.  Bing maps was the choice of Autodesk.  It's an inferior feature provider and Autodesk still decided to charge us all the highest price. More than any other cad program available.  I expect the best product deliverable s and feature providers available to come from Autodesk since we're paying the highest price for their software. Nothing but the best.  Not inferior provider's like Microsoft Bing that also requires Autodesk to put in a courtesy stamp at the bottom of each map in all our mapping drawings.

All, good, valid reasons why we pay for high-quality imagery and do not rely on something we have no control over.

Side note: We can now fly a lot of sites using this and get same/next day aerials in some cases. Smiley Happy

It's definitely not "all good".

We suffered a huge downgrade and loss of value with the decision to use Bing as the integrated Civil 3D map feature. Your argument makes absolutely no sense RK.

I also have a case that has been elevated to development where Bing fails when working with WMS connections such as FEMA's floodplain service. Not good at all...

Which argument? I've made several I'm sure.

I don't care if Autodesk negotiates with Google and brings back their imagery, but don't add $100 to a seat of Civil 3D to do it (because they have to pay Google more now) is all I'm saying.

Until such time, secure another, more reliable source for your aerial imagery. How can that make no sense?

It's an integrated feature that we pay for....that we undeservedly suffer with now with the decision to use Bing...What don't you understand about that?

Small to medium size companies can't afford more reliable mapping sources while paying the highest of premium prices for Map3D and C3D with Bing, let alone a drone or two.

According to Carl Bass Autodesk will be making huge $$$ by not offering perpetual licences anymore, so they can just eat the cost for moving to Google from Bing. Or maybe he can just deduct it from his 30 mil+ annual salary. Smiley Very Happy

I found in January, the map aerial has been updated by 3D civil, in which 2016 digitalGlobe or @ 2017 Microsoft Coporation. I need the previous one because I work with the previous one, or the older one. How to change or set the map aerial. Thanks

Not sure what you mean by previous one because Autodesk has always used the outdated "Bing" (Microsoft) mapping services for their Geo referenced Aerial mapping images in their software.  Pretty sure we're stuck. unless someone has a free solution to access the more updated Geo referenced sources like Google Earth.

@Anonymous probably means "previous version", as in ±C3D 2010, which did allow you to import Google Earth images.

Not as a background geo refed image maps as it worked since 2013 and yes in ancient history we could import the google images. Not anymore and we can't get them without paying more bucks to a third party.

Too bad ADSK still hasn't given us what we asked and paid for.  You know, the latest updated satellite image library available so we don't keep looking like idiots on parade with outdated background images provided from Autodesk and "Bing"

Thank you

Adsk dropped this ability because GOOGLE changed their license in such a way that would've caused adsk to raise their price even more.

So should they have kept the Google Earth images and raised their price (more to cover the goggle cost)? Or should they have switched to Bing and not raised their price (more than they did)?

Those who want to use the Google imagery most likely say they should have kept the Google service and upped the price. While on the other hand those who do not have a need for the Google imagery would complain about having the price raised to cover keeping Google (if they knew the price went up because of it).
