Data Shortcut Folder Creation

Data Shortcut Folder Creation

Please kill the Set Working Folder requirement. We're not in Land Desktop anymore.  Also, when data shortcuts are referenced, associate the project to the referencing drawing.

Currently, to ensure that the drawing is looking to the right folder for data shortcuts, we must click a button and browse to the working folder (one folder below where we want the shortcuts to reside) and click another button and designate THE folder where the data shortcuts do or will reside.  It would be an improvement to workflow to click one button and select the destination folder for the data shortcuts.  Defining a working folder is an extra step.

Currently, when creating a data reference, we must click another button to associate with current drawing.  It would be an improvement to workflow if when creating the reference, a dialog pops up asking if we want to associate the project to the current drawing.  The "associate" option being an seperate step, is often times forgotten.  When the "associate" option is not performed, the correct project may not be loaded up into the Prospector leading to confusion or having to go through the arduous process of defining the data shortcut folder again.

@Civil3DReminders_com not sure which one you're thinking of as the duplicate.

Here's one that's coming from the same point of view but taking it in a little different direction.

Other idea I was thinking of: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-civil-3d-ideastation/combine-working-folder-project-selection/...

This is kind of related: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-civil-3d-ideastation/recent-working-folder-list/idi-p/5800765

The main thought is the Working Folder UI/UX sucks. Experience from both teaching it to new users and having to use it.

For more complex projects i like to create sub folders for various options or components etc. and the working folder step is quite useful for me.workingfolders.jpg

But i think most people would agree that the whole DS system is in dire need of a complete overhaul anyway. Having thousands of little xml files sitting in some obscure subfolder seems a little outdated of an approach to referencing objects between dwg files. Not to mention some of the DS shortcomings i mentioned in other IS posts and forums etc..

Im starting to think civil 3D objects should somehow be tied together in a sort of sheetset like system.. Hell, sheet sets are just xml arent they?

A Sheet Set is contained within a database.
