Crossing alignment profile view projection

Crossing alignment profile view projection

I wonder why it is not possible to project crossing alignment (location) to profile view? This seems somewhat basic in road design.

Crossing as in similar to a crossing pipe versus superimposed? If that's what you're requesting then you have my judi on this request.

Just thought of a label to flag the horizontal position of the intersection point (vertical position set by a surface or manual z value) with reference to the alignment name. So there wouldn't be a need to draw an acad point etc at the crossing and projecting that to profile view (in this case I still don't have the alignment name in the point projection label).

Yeah I have been wondering why you can limit projection rules on section views, but you can't do the same thing on profile views?

But additionally there is no options for alignments either! This should be the standardized for profile views and section views.

See below..

Civil 3D 2017 and we are still waiting for the most basic functionality under the sun... @peterfunkautodesk any chance this can be added sometime soon? Alignment and profile intersection points in profile views seems relatively easy?

This is a great idea, but the timing isn’t quite right for development consideration in the near term. As such, it is being put on the back burner to be re-visited at a later date. Please continue to comment and add your support.

@peterfunkautodesk in other words come back in 10 years.. seriously? showing the intersecting profile/alignment on your profile view is basic road design..

Civil 3D is dead.. switch to 12D http://www.12d.com/ or bentley open roads https://www.bentley.com/en/products/brands/openroads

On crossing profiles and especially on section views. Sounds pretty basic, but it's something we really need!

Why is this option still not implemented anyway? I think is the most requested feature ever. When doing Civil 3D Training on school and companies, everyone asked why it’s not possible to slice a alignment, polyline, line, featureline or 3d solid in an Profile View.

With all the good additions on later version, this should have been the first one to implemented.

This really is a critical function for road design. I typically have to create dynamic feature lines for my alignments, project them to cross sections, then label them. Then for profiles there is no crossing projection, so you can project, but can only label the start / middle / end.

not sure if Autodesk realise, but on the big road projects prior to detailed design we need to have a way to show high level utility crossings (prior to them being located and modelled as pipe networks).

@p.wesolek @pricej: it's possible to use the section option for 3D Solids crossing an alignment in a Profile View. Although this provides a workaround, I still agree we need better ways to make the crossings of Civil 3D (design) objects dynamically visibly in Profile Views.

@peterfunkautodesk: it's been almost 2 years since your last mention of a possible future consideration. What about implementing this?

Why developers are silent. Apparently come up with a new color for ribbon.

@alexey.kurenkov if you sign up to the Civil 3D futures portal you may find a video of interest (sorry to be vague but there is an agreement not to share any info from futures portal). So it seems to be on their radar, and I hold high hopes.

When I woke this morning and read your response it did make me lol, so thanks for that 🙂

Projecting horizontal lines to profile view is added in 2019.2, the command is 'AddCrossingsProfile'

@robert06 it works, but seems glitchy to me.

It creates "multiply owned object" errors. When I used entdel to delete the multiply owned object, it deleted the crossing in the profile view.

Also, there is no way to add a label to the Crossing after it is created. (You can set the desired label style when you create the crossing, but you should also be able to add a label afterward as you can for a "Projection".)
If you look in the "Add Labels" dialog, there is no category for "Crossing". (It should be there under "Profile View". If you look in the list it has "Station Elevation", "Depth", and "Projection", but not "Crossing".)

Still, it's a step. Just needs some kinks ironed out. Please let me know if your experience is better.

@troma Sorry for replaying late. I'm not sure about multiply owned object errors being related to crossings, don't have any errors in some files with crossings, source of the errors appearing in files is uncertain to me.

It took a while getting used to the labelling as you get the profile labels overlapping the alignment crossing labels by default. I now mostly label crossing alignments with profile labels only, don't show label for alignment itself.

Adding label afterwards is accessed through 'crossing properties', yes there could be access to labels separately like on other civil objects, alignments etc.

@robert06 I can't comment on your files, but I did figure out what was going on in mine.

The errors I got were definitely coming from the crossing alignment object. When I used the command ENTDEL(HANDENT…)) to delete the multiply owned object, I could visually see the crossing alignment disappear from my profile view.

Please share a picture of the method to add labels. I couldn’t find it in the Add Labels dialog. I can’t test it now as I don’t have the update anymore.

Ultimately, I uninstalled the Civil 3D 2019.2 Update due to the crashes it caused with pipe networks. Normally, I have a pipes drawing with pipe networks shortcut into a profile drawing. I work back and forth between the two drawings. When I was trying to do this, anytime I hit save in the pipes drawing it would crash the profile drawing. Actually, if someone else in the office was in the pipes drawing and I was in the profile drawing, as soon as they hit save, my drawing would crash. My computer was the only one with this problem in the office and also the only computer with the update. This problem was gone as soon as I uninstalled the update.

I'll keep in mind to check the multiply owned object relation to crossings if appears.

Regarding data shortcuts, I have experienced Civil crashing when a data shortcut source changes in 2020 with surfaces, can't say if it is related to surface profile projection, but data shortcuts for sure. 2020 seems to be a lot more unstable than 2019.2 crashing at far more frequent occurrences.

Crossing labels are accessed from 'crossing properties'.
