Apply Rules to Entire Network

Apply Rules to Entire Network

It would save a lot of time if we were able to apply pipe and/or structure rules to an entire network at the same time.

As it is right now, I have to select each pipe individually in profile view, right-click, then apply rules. I have to do this for each pipe. THEN, I have to go and match up end points if they don't quite match up.

This is very time consuming.

You can apply a pipe rule to all pipes in a network at once using the preview grid in prospector. See this link for explanation:

This would also work for structures as well, just select structures in prospector and repeat the process. Not exactly what you were asking for but easier than one at a time.

You can apply some certain rule for the group of the pipes or all of them as Kevin explain that. But later on you can apply new rule by specific command in Modify/Pipe networks. There you can apply the rule for the sequence of the pipes - from upstream to downstream. Again it is not for the whole network, but it is better then do it one by one.

Prospector is good for setting the rule for each pipe/structure, but (as the guy in the video you linked said) you still need to apply the rule(s) to the network. Actually applying the rules is what I was talking about.

You can type in the APPLYRULE command, and select each pipe one by one. However, it would be nice to be able to right-click on a network and have and APPLY RULE TO NETWORK option.

Thank you all for your comments.

To apply to a series of pipes/structures, start by going to modify tab>dsign panel> pipe network. A new purple tab named PIPE NETWORKS opens. In this ribbon, on the modify panel flyout (click the down arrow next to the panel name), you'll find apply rules.

It then asks you for upstream structure/pipe; make that selection. Then, you're prompted for next downstream part, select the furthest downstream part, say an outfall. Everything between your picks is now highlighted. Press ENTER to finish.

This will get each main trunk in one process. You can then repeat this for each branch. I hear you in that applying rules to the entire network. I guess the thought is that if you set the trunk and then everything else, it will be generally in line.

Either way, analysis (in SSA or Storm Sewers) will require slopes, pipe size, etc. to change anyway. So it's not super critical to get it modeled perfectly anyway.

Why do people dream so small?

The question I have for pipe rules for structures and pipes is why aren't they applied all of the time? For instance if I lower a pipe shouldn't the downstream pipe adjust accordingly? If the grade is lower than the minimum grade shouldn't it then adjust to the minimum grade and then work downstream?

Shouldn't there be a concept of a connection point? Where the change would populate down to the connection point if necessary and then work backwords to check the pipes once again and solve it as a solution? Of course there would need to be a feature to lock important pipes in place to avoid other pipes and constraints. Some areas even want the location of the utility a set distance from an alignment, why doesn't the pipes change with the alignment?

Pipe rules in Civil 3D are stupid, have no intellegence, and should be rewritten so ideas like the one here are not even needed to be asked.
