Wipeout Causes HARD Crash

Hi All,

I have a wipeout that passes AUDIT and RECOVER with no errors but when I grip edit it or do anything that causes  AutoCAD to highlight it, AutoCAD Hard crashes without stopping at the "Send a Report" dialog.  I have never seen this behavior before with my wipeouts (I use this same shape often).  Anyone know what is causing this? 

The close-in display and direct distance entry method would not return them to any location outside the circular appearing portion of the wipeout.  AutoCAD crashed when I tried that.  AutoCAD crashed when the wipeout was highlighted and I tried to scroll zoom.

(Note: The Y-coordinates of the circles matches exactly the Y-coordinates of the open ends of the circular appearing portion.  The wipeout was originally defined to have a horizontal section that extends to where the two circles are.)

I have more information about the crashes I am seeing:

The drawing I shared was created using WBLOCK.  It should have a new clean drawing header created by the WBLOCK command.  It still crashes which led me to believe that the wipeout was the problem; however, I deleted that wipeout from the original drawing and the drawing still has hard crashes.

• It crashes when another wipeout is only highlighted, and
• It crashes when a hatch pattern is only highlighted, and
• It crashes when an image is only highlighted.
• It still crashes when I follow this sequence:
  1. zoom to the area of the opening in the wipeout at what would be he right quadrant of the circle it forms
  2. make any selection including the first point of an implied window.
  3. >>> HARD CRASH - does not open the error reporting window.

If I make sure no wipeouts, images and hatches are displayed I can work in this drawing without experiencing these crashes.

I had an issue similar to this but that was about 20 years ago.  Then, causing AutoCAD to display a particular AREA of that drawing would make AutoCAD crash.  I can't say that this is the same problem.  I have not experienced this in any other drawing.

I had made some system recent changes that Autodesk recommends to speed up AutoCAD before I experienced this problem.  I changed the settings back to their original values and the crashing persists.  These are the settings I changed:

• Set AutoCAD to Run as Administrator.
• Set the Priority of ACAD.exe to "Realtime" (was "Normal")

Autodesk!  I need your support on this one!

I don't have any problems with the drawing you posted in either 2019 or 2020. No crashes. That leads me to my first generic suggestions.

Make sure you have updated graphics card drivers.

Consider repairing the software.

Can you start a Support Request with Autodesk?

That sounds very reasonable.  I was under the impression that the latest drivers are automatically updated but I'll check that.  Did you try editing that wipeout by moving those two points out to the circles?  It is encouraging that you are not having problems.  I'll try it on another machine here... (which I should have done before I posted my issue).

I tried moving those 2 points and many others outside the circle.

No. usually the graphics drivers have to be installed. What card do you have?

I have an Nvidia Quadro p4000 video card.

I installed the updated driver for my Video Card and no longer have the problem.

we always try to avoid using wipeout, we defined colour 249 in our CTB file to be plotted as white, any solid fill with that colour can act as a mask/wipeout
