Why is the Insertion Rim Elevation different when the structure used and the Reference Surface is the same?

I have two drawing, DrawingA and DrawingB as per below.

 

They are the same in the sense that they use the same part list-- pipes (VCP 150.00mm dia) and structures (Typical Shallow Precast Concrete Manhole 1200 dia.).

 

They have the same Reference Surface for the structures-- MESPlt.

 

The only difference I can imagine is that the network in Drawing A was integrated from my plugin while the network in Drawing B was manually created directly in Civil 3D.

 

But, when we draw the profile view of networks in DrawingA and DrawingB, we can see that the first structure Insertion Rim Elevation is different

  1. The first structure in DrawingA (Structure - 1) starts exactly at 32.60m which is the elevation of the Reference Surface
  2. The first structure in DrawingB ([Structure - (5)] starts at an elevation of 32.77m when the Reference Surface has an elevation of 32.60m

Why is it so?

DrawingA and DrawingB are using different parts lists. One is "Sewerage" and the other is "Sanitary Sewer."

I couldn't get either drawing to adjust its structures to the surface.  I figured it was due to not having access to the pipe catalogs that held the parts list were made from.

 

Note: Most of my pipe network issues go away when I reset the pipe catalog locations.  (even if they look right, reset them again)

Not entirely sure what do you mean here, you said you "reset the pipe catalog locations" and you don't have access to the original pipe catalog in question. 

 

  1. So the new pipe catalog that you reset to, is not the original pipe catalog that I use to create the parts list right?
  2. Does that mean that in addition to distributing the drawing itself, I will also need to distribute the part catalog that has the parts list where the drawing is using? 
  3. If I add a new part size in the drawing, will the master part catalog be updated also with the part size?

The pipe network catalog has all the parametric pipe network structures and pipes.  The pipe network in the drawing file has a parts list that is made from the parts available in the designated catalog.  Sometimes the software needs to have its memory refreshed as to what catalog it is set to even though the settings show that it is in fact set to the correct catalog.  Resetting this, or having a user set it to the correct one, usually solves the problem they're having.

 

Upon opening your files I couldn't get any of the structures to behave so I wrote it off to not having access to the catalog that the parts list was using in the drawing so the parts wouldn't react in their normal parametric way.  (this is just my understanding of how I think it works)

@MMcCall402 , you need to set the Pipe/Structure Catalog to Metric one. And then I believe that you can already reproduce the issue. ( the below screenshot shows the correct Part catalog even though I'm using different drawing)

True, the two drawings do use different Parts lists.  But the crux of the matter is both Parts lists have the same Pipe/Structure part List, namely pipes (VCP 150.00mm dia) and structures (Typical Shallow Precast Concrete Manhole 1200 dia.), which is actually the things that are used in the drawing.  Then in this case, what really matters is the part List and not the Parts List. No?

 

And this begs the question of why the Rim Insertion Elevation aren't the same??

Have you tried swapping it out with itself?  Sometimes that fixes things like this.

It appears you are using a modified version of the Metric Structure Catalog, because even though I have the proper part catalogs set current, I cant work with the Typical Shallow Precast Manhole 1200 dia part family.   I swapped it with the only thing I had available, and it did fix the rim elevation.

  I swapped it with the only thing I had available, and it did fix the rim elevation.

 


 

 

So you can reproduce my problem right? 

 

I may be able to fix it by doing the swapping, but this is a bug on Civil 3D side which I hope it wouldn't even arise at the start. I'm a plugin developer and I just can't go to every drawing and do the manual swapping at all.
