What can you do with corridors

I am looking to learn more about corridors and use them in my projects.  I understand how to make the basic corridor but I haven't really dug into the settings to fine tune anything. 

 

I currently have an existing survey/topo of a road that needs to be mill and paved, regraded, have new sidewalk and curb put in in certain sections and new ADA ramps to be put in. The road has a centerline alignment. Can a corridor regrade the existing surface for me based on the alignment? There will be variable slopes/cross slopes along the road and sidewalk. Can it tie into the back end of the sidewalk (a control point)? Will it account for the 0.5 inch reveal of the curb?

 

Are there other uses of corridors outside of roads?

I am not a Corridor expert, but it looks like your project could make good use of corridors.

 

What version of Civil 3D are you using? The rehab subassemblies have been enhanced quite a bit in recent releases. (2018?)

 

I do not think that any of the standard subassemblies include the 0.5 inch reveal at the curb, but I may be wrong.

 

There were quite a few new subassemblies released in the last couple of years. If you can not find a suitable subassembly, you will need to use Subassembly Composer" to create your own. The PKT files for many of the recently released subassemblies were made avail by Autodesk, so you can use those as starting points for your own custom subassemblies. (I do not remember how to access these PKT files, so search the forum if you can not find them.)

I don't remember it they were included in 2016. In 2017 there is a Rehab tab on he Civil Imperial Subassembly toolpalette. If you have those. Rt-Clk on any Subassembly and select Help. That will tell you how the Subassembly operates.

BTW Do you mean a 0.5 foot reveal? IOW 6 inches.

I'm pretty sure that he means 0.5 inch.

In Maricopa County, AZ, 1/4" (0.25 inch) is standard:image.pngimage.png

Sure. This is an assembly showing paving, curb with 6" reveal and 5' sidewalk. I created the curb and sidewalk subassembly in Subassembly Composer. But there are many stock one that can do a curb reveal. I created mine more for the subbase wrapping behind the curb and under the sidewalk.

This is the help on the stock UrbanCurbGutterGeneral. You'll see parameter D controls the reveal.

so you made the sidewalk in your example to be 5'. what if the sidewalk width varies? what if some areas are 4' and others 5'? theres also areas that have no sidewalk on my project. would a corridor be able to take this into consideration? or would i have to create multiple corridors for the varying sections? 

 

same thing applies to the road width, some areas are wider than others.

If your sidewalk varies you need to use or create a subassemblies with a parameter for sidewalk width. Same goes for pavement width. You don't need to create separate corridors. You need to create Regions in the corridor and assign the appropriate assembly to that region.

 

Going back to the UrbanCurgGutterGeneral subassembly I mentioned. It contains numerous parameters for changing the dimensions.

Another way of handling the width an placement of the subassemblies is to use a Featureline as a target. The target can be conditional so the walk would only appear where there was a target.

The sidewalk width of the Urban Sidewalk subassembly can vary by setting a target.  

This subassembly has three main parts; inside boulevard, sidewalk, and outside boulevard.  "Boulevard" refers to the grass planter strip, and you can have one between the road and your sidewalk (the inside boulevard) and between the sidewalk and whatever is beyond it (the outside boulevard).  

 

In your subassembly you can set the width of the boulevards to zero if you wish to omit them. 

 

The widths of each of these three parts can also be set via a target.  In your drawing create a featureline that represents the width you want, then in the corridor, for the sidewalk subassembly, select that featureline as a target, and wherever the corridor finds that featureline it will draw the sidewalk (or boulevard) to follow that featureline. 

So your strategy would be to set the subassembly width to whatever the most common width is (say, for most of your project the width is supposed to be five feet, and only in a few places is it narrower).  Then for only those places where it's narrower, create a featureline where the sidewalk needs to be four feet.  For those corridor regions, target that featureline.  For the rest of the corridor regions, do not set a target for the sidewalk width, and it will use your default five foot width.

 

Alternately, just create separate corridor regions for the areas with a four foot width, and create a different sidewalk subassembly to use in these regions.  Set the width in the subassembly parameters to be four feet.

 

There's no right way, and no wrong way to do this, use whatever method works for you.  Just make sure you understand what's going on, and the next person to work in your drawing can figure it out as well.
