I'm fairly new to Civil 3D. My previous experience is with Carlson Civil. In that software, there is a routine that applies a grid of cut and fill depths as a way to double check whether the numbers you get in the volume report makes sense. Is there a similar function C3d?

Yes, right click on surfaces, create new and select a TIN volume surface.  Add your two surfaces to compare then you can display as isopachyte contours

Just add surface labels by grid on you volume surface.
If you want red and green you need 2 label styles and an expression
