Unknown command "MAPWSPACE" in Civil 3D?

What happened to the Mapspace task pane in Civil 3D? I just switched over to 2011 and this seems to be gone. I also have Map 3D 2011 available but I shouldn't have to change back and forth just to use the task pane. What am I missing here? Is it in a different location or called something else now?

If 2011 is the same as 2010 you need to switch workspaces to one of the Geospatial workspaces.

Hi mmcmanus,

You may use MAPWSPACE command and turn the task pane on. It should stay on the screen.

I hope this helps.

The problem is that the command doesn't work. I get the following error messege "c:\program files\autodesk\autocad civil 3d 2011\acmapworkspace.arx cannot find a dll or other file that it needs.
Unknown command "MAPWSPACE".

I also have Map 3D 2011 available to me and it works fine in there. It should work in Civil 3D 2011 too but there appears to be a dll file or something missing. I fix/repair did not work. Any ideas what files are missing?

This issue typically happens (as is the case with many ARX errors) due to issues with support paths. Other possibility is that AcMapWorkspace.arx is missing or corrupted. If the file exists in the C:\Program Files\Autodesk\AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 then most likely is corrupted and needs to be repaired. Good news is that it's on your end only (It works fine on 3 machines I tried). So you may try one of the following things to resolve.

1. Compare the Support File Search paths with any working machine and ensure they match

2. Have somebody else log to that machine with his/her user profile. Do they get the same error?

3. Copy AcMapworkspace.arx from any working machines and replace your old one

4. Perform repair from Control Panel (this should repair any modified files)

5. Perform clean install

I have checked the file paths and everything is fine there. Another person logging in has same problem. And I replaced the file with a copy from another machine and now I get another error along with the old one. The new error is "c:\program files\autodesk\autocad civil 3d 2011\acmapdwfapi.arx cannot find a dll or other file that it needs". So now I have both these errors. I must be missing a dll file but I don't know how to figure out what file might be missing.

I have a network install and the I.T. guy won't try a new install because I'm still able to use the software and there is no time now. Can I do a repair from the control panel without the DVD?

Hi mmcmanus,

I removed following path C:\program files\autodesk\autocad civil 3d 2011\fdo\binfrom my Support Search Paths and managed to get the same error as you. When I put it back the message went away. See video: http://screencast.com/t/OWM1YTUyNjUt

Please try the same. Make sure following path (C:\program files\autodesk\autocad civil 3d 2011\fdo\bin) is set as in the video:

To answer your question: if the installation is done with deployment you may be able to run repair without DVD.

That worked. Thank you very much. I don't know how that path got removed.

I was having a lot of trouble working with a drawing that would crash after opening it, sometimes while in the process of opening it.  I came across this thread and checked my support files for the fdo/bin directory.  I already had it listed in the support files, so I decided to remove it and see what happened.  I'm now having no troubles at all with the drawing.
