Rebuilt existing grade surface

Due to problems with my existing grade surface (it was created in another program and was causing my other drawings to crash) I had to recreate it in a fresh drawing. So I recreated the surface, named it the same as it was before, moved the drawing containing the broken existing grade surface and replaced it with the fresh existing grade surface. My dref editor says it's looking for the handle or name, but when I syncronize my drawings, the existing grade surface doesn't come back. Am I missing something? How can I get my existing grade surface fixed without re-doing all my work? I have 9 drawings with the existing grade dref'd into that I built my proposed surfaces in.

Please. I've attached one proposed surface drawing and the existing grade surface. I just want to be able to repair the broken reference without the drawing crashing.

You might want to try switching it to name only, but I never quite understood the utility of that utility.
You'd be better of trying to rebuild the original.
What happened to the original?

Hi Chris - 

I took a look at your files and did not have any trouble with invalid references.  

Make sure the path to your data shortcut working folder and project folder is set correctly in Prospector.  If that is still not working, delete the reference to the surface and recreate it (from the file Bruckner_EG.dwg).

I'd switch your DREF path/object using the Data Shortcuts Editor located under Start -> Programs -> Autodesk -> Product name... switch the surface from Handle or Name to Name only. Drawing file it resides in will need to remain as the exact same name as well as the surface maintaining exact same name.

Then in the file that has the DREF issue, you should be able to open. If it still can't find, you should be able to right click on surface in Toolspace, hit synchronize, a dialog will appear stating Broken Data Reference, Hit REPAIR BROKEN REFERENCE, then map to the drawing file. It should find the surface.

I think it's no use. I may as well rebuild all my surfaces. I've been able to get it to repair the broken reference but when that works, my proposed surface still does not respond well. I haven't tried in other drawings yet hopefully this is a drawing specific issue.

This is unrelated, but why would name only make any difference from handle or name? It's not handle and name. I've always been confused about this.

It was a problem with that particular drawing and proposed surface. My other drawings are working fine.

Have you tried WBLOCKing the problem surface and inserting into a clean dwg
