Point Cloud to CAD Drawing

Hey,

Good afternoon, I'm trying to create a CAD drawing of a power line tower from LiDAR point cloud.

I have converted the LAS into .rcp and imported into Civil3D. Are there any videos that show how to trace the point cloud to get a 3 wireframe model of the tower from point cloud?

Is C3D the right software for this application? Any help is appreciated greatly. Thank you for your help.

Best regards,

Varun Mittagunta.

While in Recap did you classify the ground data?

I use the Infraworks to process the data and then bring that data to C3D. I try to limit the Point Cloud in C3D as it's not geared towards that.

Hi @varunaditya_mittagunta

This can be done in InfraWorks with Linear Feature Extraction:

Depending on the density, Autocad can extract intersection lines and points from point clouds - see the help here - https://help.autodesk.com/view/ACD/2023/ENU/?guid=GUID-C0C610D0-9784-4E87-A857-F17F1F7FEEBE

Hi @varunaditya_mittagunta

Additionally, you may try our new tool available on ACC.

Automatic Linear Extraction tool in ACC.

I'm trying to create a CAD drawing of a power line tower from LiDAR point cloud.  I have converted the LAS ...

You could plot the tower points (as fairly lean DbPoints) in CAD using DotSoft LidarTools Freeware on Autodesk App Store then play connect the dots with CAD objects.  Be sure to specify classes 13, 14, 15, 16 to eliminate ground points, etc.

One of the tools in that freeware plots AutoCAD points at the 3D location in the lidar file.  It allows you to specify lidar classes, the numbers I referenced are for high structures.  It also allows you to specify a rectangular window to limit the point to.  It may not be optimal, but the user could then generate 3dFaces or 3dPolys (Power Lines) by snapping to the points.  Once an area is done erase the point objects leaving the structure drawing, move on to the next area, etc.  Keep your point plots areas small and limited by class because too many points will bring CAD to a grinding halt.
