Point cloud not displaying as an xref

I have a file which I have xref'd a cloud surface. For the life of me I can not get the contours to display in the second file. I have "LEVELOFDETAILL OFF"  in both files and all the layers are on in both files.  I have "zoomed extents" and did a "regenall". Nothing is showing up. According to the Autocad help files I should be able to reference a point cloud to a second file....or do they lie.

Vrs 2015 in use.

Try using data reference (Create Data Shortcut), not xreference.

Ok I finally got it. If I make sure "LEVELOFDETAIL" is off in both files before I try and xref it appears to work.

I will keep in mind the data reference in case it acts up.
