Offset Vertical profile 5’ cover of pipe

Hi all,

 

i have been working with a Fiber optic line that needs to have 5’ of cover on it from the surface for staking. I know i can use the layout tool and manually draw the fiber optic line in so i can export it out like a vertical alignment to the field. Idea:   Paste the current surface into a new surface then lower that new surface 5 ft. with a surface edit.  Profile the new 5' lower surface.

Will the new surface hold the FO elevation for staking ? So the field crews will have a cut of 5’ at that station on the profile?

I'm not sure what you mean.

 

The new surface will be exactly like the original surface, just 5 ft. lower.  You can use the surface for elevations that will be 5 ft. lower than the original surface at the same horizontal location.

You can use the plain copy command to duplicate your layout profile. Copy it without any displacement. Then use the Raise Lower tool in the Profile Geometry editor to lower it 5'

P.S. You would likely be better off creating a layout profile for staking vs. trying to stake the surface profile. A surface profile is going to have a VPI at every triangle which is way too much for stakeout. You can also use the pressure pipe tools which will create a VPI at every XX' based on the cut length you set for the conduit (pipe).

 

The down side is the pressure pipe tools are cumbersome to work with.

Another option for the FO profile would be to make a feature line from the alignment and set its elevations from the current surface. Then lower the feature line 5 ft. with the feature line editing tools and project it into the profile view.

Just to add to this idea, you can weed points in a feature line so that there are elevation points every X feet, mimicking pipe lengths. Its what we used to do before pressure pipe tools. And in some cases, we still do.
