Object, parcels, lines, vanishing???

I'm lost on what is going on...  Civil 3d (2018), I have created a new drawing, connected some shp files to the drawing.  Then I've added some parcels, basic geometry (lines, text...etc.).  If I save and close, then reopen in civil, thoses parcels, lines, text...etc are gone, not viewable or selectable.  I know they are there as I can see the parcel in my site, in fact upon opening the file, all the opjects flash on the screen, then vanish once fully loaded.  It's as if all items are placed in the background not accessible.  I've tried rebuild, audit to see if that works...Yes all layers are turned on and not frozen.  If I open the dwg in AutoCAD...all of my objects are plainly visible.

I am lost on why this is happening...anyone else have a clue as to what could be the culprit???

I've only had this happen once before, and I ended up having to redo the drawing. Lucky I had something I could use from another drawing and did a copy paste of the data I had. Don't know what caused it, just opened the drawt that I was using the day before and it did just as you described. I'd see the drawing and it would vanish in front of me .

Agreed..I've never seen this before either.

I did redo the drawing, luckily there was minimal work in it...and it still did it.  To be sure...I'm using connect data for some shp files...  So I'm not sure if that is the culprit as when I re-open the file, the objects display briefly, then the shp files start to queue up.  So I'm wondering if it's creating a draw order that pushes the objects to the background.  but even so, I've tried dis-connecting from the data and turn off geo map, hoping that the objects would be displayed.

In that case you may want to do a direct mapimport of the data. That way you have native polylines to convert to parcels. The fdo connection isn't really a permanent part of the drawing per say as it loads up at open. I didn't think you could even convert an fdo object to a parcel.

It sounds like you just recreated the drawing. That is often the fastest solution.

Other option to try next time:

  • Recover the drawing
  • Purge All, Audit yes, -Purge Regapps * N, save, close, reopen. (I call this the CADD condom)
  • Start a new drawing, insert the problem drawing.
  • Isolating your work in multiple dwg files can help. Start a new drawing, xref in base information, create only parcel information in this file.

In your mapwspace, check at the bottom where the "Map Base" is. This needs to be checked on. The sub "default" should be off. The Map Base is/are your cad entities.  See attached. Took me almost a day to figure this out back in the day. It can be a good cruel prank to play on someone that has it coming to them.

Glad I could help. It is pretty scary.

Its for that CAD operator that thinks they know everything, but is the one that can preform every known task to lock CAD up on a daily basis and then want your help, BUT never listen.  🙂

Those slots come in how you spin the wheel, It's a slots here that someone will help or assist, the solution  lies in the endeavor is to pass them. Pass on knowledge and help others through the slots.
