mapimport vs drag n drop shp issue

I'm using C3D 2019 with all updates.

My drawing is in NAD83 Ohio State Plan, South Zone, US Foot. I have a parcel shp file with coordinate system of NSRS11.OH-SF. When I drag n drop shp in vs mapimport, there's a 1.0095' shift with the mapimport method.

Any idea why?

To add, I did 2 more tests (drag n drop shp vs mapimport) with data from OH and WV.

I grabbed a different parcel shp file in Ohio. The shp file was NSRS11.OH-NF. My drawing is in NAD83 Ohio State Plane, North Zone, US Foot. The shift with mapimport method was almost 1'.

When I compared WV parcel data using the same 2 methods, they hit correctly over top each other. The shp file is in UTM83-17 and my drawing is in NAD83 West Virginia State Plane, South Zone, US Foot.

Nevermind...lol. I closed down the drawing and re-opened and walaa, they were over top of each other perfect. Makes no sense why the map engine does that. I've seen where shp files have landed thousands of feet off of my site, but closing down drawing and opening it back up corrects whatever hiccup Map had.

Hi,
Can you zip together and post one of the shapefiles? I'd like to test that.

Wow, I see it too! Closing and re-opening the drawing puts them back together. I've never seen that before. I'm using C3D 2022 with all updates. What are you using?

It seems that the mapimport is good. Its dragging it over that has the shift. I tried connecting through mapspace and it did the same thing as dragging. After I saved and reopened I deleted the connection and reconnected. It came in correct. The 1' appears to be the correct shift from the two projections. Looks like map doesn't make the shift until you get out and back in the dwg. This is a good thing to be aware of. Are you going to send something to autodesk?

Yes, but not sure what avenue is best to send thru. I thought of 2 avenues:

1. Create a case thru my account

2. Send this link to my Autodesk Territory Account Sales Rep

Any suggestions on avenue?

Good question. @Pointdump, Dave should know. 🙂

I'd do both, and in that order.

Have you tried using the Data Connect Palette?

I added your shapefle using the a Data Connection. I didn't use the Drag-N-Drop method. See blue line work below.

I also 'imported' the same shapefile using MapImport command. Refer to dashed red lines. The shapefile line work and the imported line work fall on top of one another.

The assigned CS used in modelspace is OH83-SF (EPSG 3735). Didn't have to close down and reopen the drawing.

Interesting. I did that too, but have the shift. (2021.3) See attached. The white is the mapimport.

Yes, I performed data connect to the shp file thru mapwspace after I attempted the drag n drop method vs mapimport thinking that might have something to do with it. Result was still shifted. I also grabbed a different state parcel and did all 3 methods with no shift. It's hit or miss and the explanation has no rhyme or reason. Also, on one of my tests, the shape file landed thousands of feet away. I saved, closed and re-opened and visually saw the graphics re-project during the open process to where it needed to be. Interesting!

Strange....I'm trying but I can't replicate the problem. I'm not getting that shift.

Did you zoom in with lineweights off? The shift is miniscule, so if your lineweights are on, you won't see it.

Line weight ON.

Line weight OFF.

I can easily perform this  experiment using two circles each with a different radius.

  1. Turn OFF polylines  from MapImport so only the shapefile remains.
  2. Using osnap, draw a circle with centerpoint at the shapefile's corner. Write down the circle's center point.
  3. Turn OFF shapefile and turn OFF circle. Turn ON polylines from MapImport.
  4. Using osnap, draw a second circle with centerpoint at the polyline's corner. Write down circle's centerpoint.
  5. Compare coordinates of both centerpoints.

Sorry, but this experiment using plain vanilla AutoCad commands reveals my drawing using your shapefile has no shift.

I checked this in C3D and ArcMap. When you drag it seems it comes in at its system and does not transform until you close the dwg and get back in. I got the same coords in ArcMap for both systems as I did in cad. The shift is NW 1'. See attached. My lesson here is mapimport works so I will do that first and if I want a connection use the mapimport to check.

Was the coordinate system assigned before or after creating the civil/AutoCad objects?

I recreated @sfore's original post. Started the dwg in OH83-SF. Mapimport makes the shift. Drag or connection does not make the shift until you close and get back in the dwg.
