Layout Tab Not Updating When Re-Naming From SSM

Morning all, new version of Civil 3D, new issues......Sigh. This time, it seems to be an issue with a disconnect between my SSM and my layout tabs. I almost always, for every project, have my option to rename the layout tab to what I want linked from the SSM. Always makes it easier to change it once, and I also never had to worry that the two would have separate names, just in case someone else got happy with the drawings and started changing the names of things without doing it in the SSM. Now, I am changing the name from my SSM as soon as I am importing the sheet, then immediately changing the name to what I want the sheet to be called and it will not update the name in the layout tab. I'm having to do a copy and paste operation each time to make them match and I don't like that at all. I've updated the name, saved it, closed it, re-opened it, saved it, closed down all of Civil 3D, re-opened it and even tried adding new sheets and it still won't do it.

Example of typical work flow:

  • Opening my EXISTING CONDITIONS sheet.
  • Performing a Save-As.
  • Renaming my new sheet.
  • Import Layout as new sheet to my sheet set.
  • Rename in sheet set to new sheet name.
  • Layout Tab name will automatically update (It is at this point, I generally notice my layout tab name automatically update from "EXISTING CONDITIONS" to the new name.) This is what's not happening.

Not really sure why there is a disconnect, and I have checked everything that I know to check and it's still not updating. Although when I check where the option to rename layout to match sheet title is checked, but it is also greyed out, meaning I cannot toggle it if I wanted to. I am the only one working in these drawings so I know that I am the only one that can have them open.

I also looked into the following previous question: Rename Layout To Match Sheet Title Greyed Out and I'm in the category of having checked both using VPN and not, and I'm working off Teams, but this hasn't been a problem with any of my other projects until now. I know Civil 3D gets random ghosts in the software from time to time.

I know this might seem like a very minor inconvenience, but I have ADHD and OCD like mad, and it's really throwing a kink into my work flow. I like things to work the way they're supposed to and even if the copy and paste is fairly quick, it's still a workaround that I'd rather not have to do for every sheet. This set is only 6 or 7 sheets, and the next is only about 8, but it'll get really annoying to me if I can't fix it before I have to do another 100+ set.

Thanks to any and all that may have ideas!

It sounds like you have done a lot of troubleshooting. Have you tried renaming a layout in a core AutoCAD drawing? It would be good to know if this is a Civil 3D-only issue. SSM is a core AutoCAD function, so you might have luck searching there.

The ACC Version of SSM has been a major effort. There is a separate discussion area for ACC. There may or may not be a correlation here.

Good Luck!

@civilengineer83 I am not using Civil3D, but regular ACAD.  A few of my team members just realized this same issue a month or two ago.  And I just ran into it myself a few minutes ago.  We looked at everything from SSM properties to file permissions and nothing.  I opened the file that SSM was referencing and saw that there was missing xrefs.  Specifically it was a missing data extraction file/data link that was missing.  I detached it.  saved, closed.  Went back to SSM and rename/renumber....voila.  The tick boxes were accessible now.

I don't know if it was just a coincidence or what.  So I guess the moral of my story is to check and make sure the file is cleaned up as far as xrefs & data links and see if that does anything.

Hope this helps.
