Issue when creating surface from 3d faces - holes in surface

I have a file with 3d faces that I want to create a surface from. I do the usual drawing object --> 3D faces --> maintain edges routine. A surface is created but there are holes, as if some of the 3D faces have been omitted -see picture.

Things I've tried:

- using only faces from one lane of the road, works fine --> adding the next lane, not fine

- making sure that no vertical faces are in the selection, no difference.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be?

I have attached a screenshot of my attempt to create a surface and the dwg with the 3D faces.

Some of the faces are longer than your Maximum Triangle Length. Either turn that off or increase the maximum length.
