Intel i9 last gens stability in C3D

Hello,

as I understand the current rumors about stability issues about the highest Intel i9/7 processors, 13th and 14th gen, mainly concern deployment in games and servers. Still, does anyone have any (negative) experiences with stability in C3D? Thanks

Because Civil 3d is primarily a single threaded processor, I don't spring for the i9 parts.  I have been reading on this and according to Intel the issue seems to be mostly impacting people who overclock their systems.

Right. Coincidentally, I just watched THIS guy, who says that it's actually a single-thread workload that can cause permanent damage. Just saying...

Interesting, will try to check that out.  If I had an I9 I probably wouldn't be panicking about it, but I probably would check for updates a bit more frequently.

No issue here with a 13900k since end 2022. But... I always undervolted the CPU

I got about half way through the video. It looks like these failures are under very specific circumstances that I doubt would be created by Civil 3D.

Also, Civil 3D does use multithreading when possible. Engineering calculations are linear so have to be single thread. But Graphics and file operation are multi. The handling of Data Shortcuts can be multithread. See:

So while calculations in Civil 3D are single thread it does a lot of work that is.

So if you go for the i9. I don't think you'd have to worry about Civil 3D breaking it.

my opinion is the same, that with a C3D type computational deployment (of mine that I don't do any sort of heavy rendering or so), the risk of problems is minimal. Especially if I know that I have to take care of the voltage limit (as it is/was unlimited by default).

 

I just wanted to open this topic and also get feedback from real users of the particular CPUs.

At this moment I am in the position of having an offer on the table for a new workstation with an i9-14900K.

And Autodesk is multithreading more code in Civil 3d.  Applied in Civil 3d 2024 was the ENABLEDSMULTITHREAD system variable to turn on multithreaded data shortcuts.  This was a big time saver for our setup.

I’ve mostly seen the instability issues pop up in heavy gaming or overclocked setups, not so much in professional 3D tools like C3D—at least from my experience so far. If you're into performance-heavy tasks like racing sims or game environments, we’ve had to optimize carefully for stability too.
