I've been given 3 dtm surface files that I believe were created in Microstation. I need to import them into Civil 3d to utilized the legecy surfaces.
I've seen several topics on this accross the net but no real answers. Is there a way to convert these to a usable xml file format or import these dtm files into a surface or drawing.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Thanks to Mike for converting that file for the OP. Even though we're enemies in business, you've proven to be a standup guy.
Best regards,

He didn't, sir.
Mike converted DTM file by Corboto, while I bet the OP gotta buy μstation...
I guess I misunderstood. I take it all back!
InRoads DTM format can include breaks Boundaries, Holes etc just as other TINs. InRoads DTM also can contain features both triangulated and non triangulated. These can then be used as a target in Roadway designer.
Attached is an example of the other DTM that was linked in Open Roads Technology DGN… I then saved it as a DWG- You will notice the triangles, features and breaks… the actual Terrain is a block type entity in DWG because DWG has not Terrain element as MicroStation Does. Also notice the “TRUE DWG” this is an actual DWG created with AutoDesk libraries. MicroStation will work natively (without conversion) with DWG from R-11 to 2013. MicroStation does this by limiting itself when working with DWG and basically running AutoCad as a Subset inside MicroStation.
Please be aware the translation and conversion is NOT for production purposes as there could be factors I was not aware of when converting such as Coordinate system and units used…
The links are to the example DWG and XML for the 1996DTM

Mr.Mike,
let me tell ya something, friendly.
You should thank God you can advertise your product at competitor's home.
This is a democratic forum, and you're the living proof of it.
I only wonder whether: how would be treated an Autodesk dealer posting in a Bentley forum..?
If I may speak in Mike's behalf,
I know him personally and I can testify that he is not a dealer or in any way connected with Bentley marketing. He does offer assistance to users who have problems involving Bentley products, as is the case here, and he also contributes to discussions that involve Bentley products. I see no harm in that.
He is obviously passionate about his products and is eager to highlight their strengths, but I've never seen him start new posts to advertise or promote his products. Indeed it is good to have a balance of input to offset prejudice or misinformation .
I don't know if any Autodesk personel post on the Bentley forums, but as long as they are there to assist users with Autodesk related issues or questions I don't think anyone should object, even if they do mention their product's strengths. It doesn't hurt to be informed.
An Autodesk user posting on another product forum? Not possible!
Pics - or it didn't happen.

No he keeps forgetting his users name and password.

Those are contradicting statements. You stated that he is passionate about and eager to highlight their strenghts, so are they "his" products or are they not?
He has plenty of posts that speak specifically about the advantages of using Bentley projects, and you basically said that by saying "eager to highlight their strengths".
Maybe he isn't in Bentley "Marketing", but is he involved with "Bentley", is the better question.
Mike has plenty to offer and is a value to the community, but I believe he could do so without promoting Bentley, look at his signature... it's right there.

pretty sure thats pushing Bentley

Not sure what you meant by only game... Unless your talking C3D playing smallball.
Bentleys Open Roads Civil technology (SS3 Release) has greatly raised the bar. Unlike Civil3D the product has been released stable. Open Roads is a common Technology in all 3 Bentley Civil Apps (InRoads, GEOPAK and MX Road)..
Rules based design, 100% modeling and we took our users intellectual propert (IE what they know of there current Civil app) and managed to maintain a link to it.

We had the same problem, DTM's won't load because they are, as mentioned prioprietary or a "different language". It's like getting an excel file somebody renamed to .pdf and trying to open it lol... we also convert them with the proprietary program that claims compatibility...
you don't actually need the dtm file if the tin lines are in the drawing but i didn't read all the posts to see if you have any of the linework or points from said program.
He who fears his enemy will lose the battle. As I see it as long as Mike or any one else posts true facts and can back them up I have no problem.
"Create Surface from InRoads DTM..." would be a sweet and handy little C3D surface option, especially for those of us whose left foot is Int'l foot and right is US Survey.
Now you can transfer the .DTM file to the Cloud and get the xml file after that!

I was using a built in inroads translator tool. It's part of the 2017 Productivity Pack installation
I was able to quickly take a dtm and produce a civil3D drawing with a surface I can share.
**NOTE: Once the file is converted and saved to the Surfaces folder under the main segment file;
At that point I like to lock the surface and name it with the date it was updated, somethings like: 2017-08-XX-Segment 6 Prop Surface
Once the file is created, you want to share it as a data shortcut. Then all of the design files will need to be updated to reference the latest surface groundlines and projected onto the profiles.
I suggest keeping the old groundlines as a backup file or as static profiles on void layer in the drawing, this will make comparing the latest updates easier.
BTW, the translator function is really nice because you can also convert microstation .alg files for alignments/profiles.
.
hello, please can i import .dtm file build in INRAIL software into civil3d?
thank u
If it can be exported LandXML then there is a chance this could be done
neilyj (No connection with Autodesk other than using the products in the real world)
