Yes, this is definitely the way to go. It is super easy... and dynamic per your request.

XML of alignments - screenshot (done via hatching in ACAD drawing) shows what I want to show dynamically

The XML didn't preserve the C3D smart Offset relationships with the CL alignment.
I just quickly created a CL with constant 12' wide paved lanes either side of CL, then did some exaggerated Widenings (magenta hatch) for demonstration purposes.
This is all dynamically reponsive to changes in the Parent Alignment.
I use the process that Joe linked to all the time to show the difference between existing & proposed for our corridors. We often have alignment modifications, our existing uses a different code for the pavement link than the proposed, same result.

If you only have alignments, add another set of widenings that to the normal road width and then hatch between those and the ones with the widenings. You might need to turn off the labels before you do that. If you use this or the corridor method you should end up with widenings and hatches that respond to changes in the design.

I only have a horizontal alignment..
That's fine. That's all I started with...
Hint for homework: I did not have to use any surfaces, neither for a Profile or Targets...

Peter,
I just tested your suggestion and the Hatch disappeared when I moved the Parent Alignment.
Is that a defect?
.
This is not stable. Now it is staying in the Drawing, but losing its Associativity.

The corridor is easy and does not have to model and is dynamic.
rename the file with dwg extension; the dg wouldn't let me post a drawing for some reason
